UP hands UE 27th consecutive loss to secure 2nd spot

MANILA, Philippines — The University of the Philippines (UP) obtained the second spot at the end of the first round after defeating the hapless University of the East (UE), 91-81, in the UAAP Season 89 men’s basketball tournament at the UST Quadricentennial Pavilion on Saturday night. This win allowed the Fighting Maroons to enjoy a solo second with a 5-2 win-loss record, while the Red Warriors still could not crack through the win column, 0-7. UP overcame UE’s challenge in the fourth quarter with Toper Lagat firing from all cylinders to possibly score an upset. However, James Payosing paced the Fighting Maroons down the stretch to secure a 91-81 victory. Payosing finished with 16 points and 12 rebounds, while Chicco Briones and Gani Stevens added 12 and 12 points, respectively. The Fighting Maroons scattered their offense as Elliot Dimaculangan and Veejay Pre both chipped in 11 points, while Dikachi Ududo and Rey Remogat added 10 points identically. UE, on the other hand, suffered its 27th straight loss, as the last time the Red Warriors won a match was on October 26, 2024. Lagat mounted 26 points, two rebounds, and five assists for UE, but it was not enough to score a win in UAAP Season 89. The Red Warriors now tied UP’s own record of 27 straight losses set between 2012 and 2014. The all-time longest losing streak in UAAP history is still held by the Adamson Soaring Falcons, who endured 35 consecutive losses from 1999 to 2002.
