Rockets' Kevin Durant, Suns owner Mat Ishbia spar on social media

Manila Times - Oct 18, 2026

PHOENIX — Houston Rockets superstar Kevin Durant and Phoenix Suns owner Mat Ishbia had a spat on social media Saturday after Durant took issue with Ishbia's description of the 16-time All-Star's tenure with the Suns during a recent television interview. In an appearance on CNBC Sport, Ishbia said that he “threw money at the problem” when dealing for Durant in 2023 and that “bringing in super talented players like Kevin Durant doesn't necessarily lead to championships.” Durant took issue with that characterization. “#blamekd even though KD stayed on top of his game at 36 and got u back this ‘culture’ you love so much. Aye, Matthew acts like I got arrested for a DUI or sumn. Back to threads," Durant posted. Ishbia responded with his own message, saying “You obviously didn’t watch the clip. Didn’t blame you @Kdtrey5, but am happy with the culture we are building here in Phoenix. We got the right guys and right focus now and are excited for this season. Good luck this season in Houston.” Durant had one more response, writing “U should be giving Thanks every chance u get. You don’t have to pay me an absurd amount of money to play for another team.” Just days after Ishbia...

My Wish to fly the Sha Tin Trophy flag for Mark Newnham with Invincible Ibis sidelined

Mark Newnham will rely solely on Group One winner My Wish in Monday’s Group Two Sha Tin Trophy (1,600m) as last season’s Derby winner Invincible Ibis’ immediate future is uncertain after suffering a leg injury. Invincible Ibis was withdrawn from the Sha Tin Trophy on Thursday and is facing a long spell on the sidelines after sustaining a left fore ligament injury. It is almost certain he will now miss December’s Group One Hong Kong Mile and Newnham will be as patient as he needs to be as he...

Haaland brace extends Man City's winning start in Premier League

MANCHESTER, United Kingdom — Erling Haaland struck twice as Manchester City defiantly extended their blistering start to the Premier League season with a 3-2 win against Ipswich on Saturday. Phil Foden put City ahead in the first half at the Etihad Stadium before Daizen Maeda grabbed a shock equaliser for Ipswich. Haaland netted before the interval and struck again after the break to take his tally for the season to 12. Zian Flemming's penalty came too late to stop City making it seven successive league victories. It was City's second win since the club were found guilty of more than 100 breaches of Premier League financial regulations last month. City, who are appealing against the decision, sit six points clear of champions Arsenal at the top of the table. The Gunners can close the gap if they win at Nottingham Forest on Sunday. City boss Enzo Maresca is the first manager to win his first seven games in charge in the Premier League. The Etihad stands were awash with inflatable bananas throughout as City's supporters continued to show their backing for the Abu Dhabi-owned club during their ongoing crisis. The blow-up fruit, a throwback to their supporters' craze from the late 1980s, has come to symbolise their defiance in the face of a potential massive points deduction or even expulsion from the Premier League if the appeal fails. City showed their spirit remains intact on the pitch as well and Foden gave the hosts the lead on 19 minutes. Jeremy Doku cut inside the from the left and pulled back for Foden who, in his first appearance since his red card at Old Trafford last month, turned home from eight yards. City's lead lasted just two minutes as Abdoul Ouattara released Maeda with a well-weighted ball down the right. The pass arced around the backtracking Marc Guehi and Maeda outpaced and the outmuscled the England centre-back to seize possession and sit Gianluigi Donnarumma down with a composed finish. But City regained their lead on 34 minutes when Mateo Kovacic reached the byline and pulled back for Haaland to power a header through Christian Walton's grasp. Nico O'Reilly went close after the restart with a header from a corner but Haaland made no mistake to grab his second on 69 minutes. Iliman Ndiaye created the opportunity with a strong run from deep before playing in the striker with a defence-splitting pass. Ouattara could not keep his footing as Haaland skipped past him and coolly beat Walton. Haaland thought he had claimed a hat-trick when he volleyed home after Ndiaye hit the bar, but his strike was disallowed by VAR for offside against Enzo Fernandez. VAR intervened again moments later, changing the mood of the game when Guehi was ruled to have fouled Abdul Fatawu in the area. Flemming dispatched the penalty but City held firm to show they won't be fazed on the pitch by the club's off-field woes.

Williams lifts Valkyries past Dream in WNBA Finals opener

SAN FRANCISCO, United States — Gabby Williams scored a game-high 26 points, including four key free throws in the final 1:18 as the Golden State Valkyries held off the Atlanta Dream 68-64 in game one of the WNBA Finals on Saturday. Williams, runner-up to Atlanta's Angel Reese in Defensive Player of the Year voting, has emerged as an offensive force for the Valkyries in the playoffs. She carried the scoring load on a tough shooting night for the hosts -- who didn't have another player score in double figures. She took some time to warm up, going scoreless in the first quarter as the Valkyries got off to a tentative start in front of a raucous crowd at Chase Center arena. "Once we all started having fun and the excitement got out, we started to kind of find our way," Williams, who erupted for 16 points in the second quarter, said in an on-court interview. "There was a lid on that basket tonight, but that's why we rely on our defense," she said. Golden State trailed by one with 1:18 remaining when Williams seized the rebound off a miss by Atlanta's Allisha Gray and was fouled by Reese. Williams made both free-throws to put the Valkyries up 65-64 and added another pair of free throws to seal the win with 4.1 seconds left. Gray, the Dream's leading scorer, returned after missing two games with a hand injury and scored 19 points. But she was scoreless in the fourth quarter, when Atlanta made just two of their 19 attempts from the floor. Reese added 14 points and 12 rebounds, and Rhyne Howard scored 12 for Atlanta. The Valkyries will host game two of the best-of-seven series on Monday. Both teams are chasing a first WNBA title. The Dream have come up empty in three prior trips to the Finals, most recently in 2013. The Valkyries, who last year became the first WNBA expansion franchise to reach the playoffs in their inaugural season, are now contending for the title in their second.

Still, poor crowds for Grand Slam Track’s (GTS) April 2025 debut in Jamaica raised the first red flag. Attendances over the...
