Cavaliers beat 76ers, 119-95

Manila Times - Nov 7, 2026

CLEVELAND — LeBron James got a warm reception from Northeast Ohio fans when he was the last of the Philadelphia 76ers' starters introduced before Friday night's game against the Cleveland Cavaliers. That was the only highlight for James, who scored in single digits for only the 10th time in 1,630 NBA regular-season games. James was held to eight points as the Cavaliers routed the 76ers 119-95 in an NBA Cup group stage game. The Akron, Ohio, native - who elected to sign with Philadelphia in the offseason instead of returning to Cleveland for a third stint - was 3 of 12 from the field, including 0 for 4 on 3-pointers, and committed six turnovers in 31 minutes. "Definitely not feeling a good rhythm offensively,” said James, who came out with 3:54 remaining and the 76ers trailing by 19 points. "We didn’t look like much offensively. We had a couple spurts, but too many turnovers on my behalf.” James received a smattering of boos from Cavaliers fans every time he touched the ball during the first half. There was no video tribute to James, a surprising omission from recent years. Last season, the Cavaliers showed highlights of James scoring 25 straight points during Game 5 of the...

Eala rises to new career-high No. 16 in WTA live rankings

MANILA, Philippines — Following a quarterfinal win at the WTA 250 Hong Kong Open Friday night, Alex Eala climbed one spot to a new career-high No. 16 in the WTA live rankings. Eala entered the final tournament of her season with a new official career-high rank of No. 17 with 2,289 points last week. Reaching the semifinals after three wins including a 7-6(7), 7-5 quarterfinal escape against world No. 81 Antonia Ruzic, Eala now sports 2,327 points. The 21-year-old netter eclipsed former No. 16 in 4-time Grand Slam champ Naomi Osaka who has 2,315. Hong Kong No. 2 seed Eala was set to face world No. 30 and No. 4 seed Maria Sakkari in the semifinals on Saturday afternoon. A win against the former world No. 3 would not only give a final spot to Eala but also push her another career-high rank No. 15. The live rankings indicated that Eala's next total points after a semis win would be 2,392. That would be enough for Eala to overtake current No. 15 Sorana Cirstea who has 2,386 points. Hong Kong top seed Cirstea couldn't pad her total points anymore since she fell to world No. 136 Alexandra Shubladze in their quarterfinal encounter, 2-6, 3-6. If Eala goes on to win the Hong Kong tournament, she will raise her total to 2,479 points albeit she won't go higher than No. 15 since No. 14 Elise Mertens has 2,540. Thus, Eala will end her season with a ranking of either No. 16 or No. 15. That is a 34 or 35-rank improvement from her No. 50 finish last year. If Eala gets past Sakkari, she will either face Shubladze or world No. 102 Claire Liu in the final on Sunday.  Eala has two titles this 2026 season - a 125-tier Birmingham Open last June and her first main Tour title in 500 D.C. Open last August.

NU, FEU clash for quarterfinals No. 1 seed in Shakey's Super League

MANILA, Philippines — Undefeated squads defending champion National University and Far Eastern University square off in an explosive battle for the top seeding in the crossover quarterfinals as the 2026 Shakey’s Super League (SSL) Unity Cup Round of 8 concludes on Saturday at the Playtime FilOil Centre in San Juan. Already assured of twice-to-beat incentives after hurdling their first two assignments in Pool E, the five-peat-seeking Lady Bulldogs and Lady Tamaraws meet at 3 p.m. in a rematch of last year’s semifinals to secure a favorable position in the next round. NU won its first five games in the league’s centerpiece competition, backed by Shakey’s Pizza Parlor, Peri-Peri Charcoal Chicken, Potato Corner, and R&B Milk Tea, in sweeping fashion but had to fight back from a set down to repel Adamson University, 18-25, 25-19, 25-12, 25-22, on October 28. Lady Bulldogs head coach Norman Miguel warns his team against complacency and expects his players to learn from their mistakes in the previous outing. “Marami kaming natutunan from last game. Natalo kami sa first set because of lack of connection between spikers and setters, lack of focus, and nandoon din kasi ‘yung gigil factor,” Miguel said. “When we got back to our groove, ‘yung normal na kilos and game character that's the time na nanalo kami.” Miguel is pinning his hopes on the trio of sophomore Sam Cantada, Arah Panique and Vange Alinsug to beat streaking FEU, which bagged the bronze medal last year. The Lady Tamaraws crushed College of Saint Benilde, 25-14, 25-9, 25-17, over a week ago to snatch a quarters bonus.        FEU looks to match NU’s firepower with its vaunted net defense, anchored by solid middle blockers Cla Loresco and Jaz Ellarina, and versatile opposite spiker Ia David, who scored three kill blocks last game. The winner will face the No. 4 seed in Pool F in the quarterfinals of the competition, supported by the Philippine Sports Commission, the Commission on Higher Education, Mikasa, Asics, Rigour Technology, Jersey Haven, Solar Sports and 12 Beyond Production as technical partners.         Meanwhile, last year’s runner-up University of Santo Tomas aims to preserve its perfect record and lock the Pool F No. 1 seed when it collides with Letran at 1 p.m. The Golden Tigresses booked a quarters advantage after taking down erstwhile unbeaten University of the Philippines, 26-28, 25-15, 25-17, 25-11, for their second win in the round-robin second round.         However, UST can’t afford another slow start against the Lady Knights, who are eyeing the last quarters incentive. “Nagiging trend sa team namin na talagang slow start kami sa first set. ‘Yun talaga 'yung need namin i-improve,” UST winger Angge Poyos said. “Good thing na rin sa team namin marami talagang mga batang nag-i-step up lalo na ‘yung mga galing sa bench. Nagko-contribute naman sila especially kapag 'di maganda ang nangyayari sa loob. Ready sila kapag ipinapasok sila,” she added. Letran is fresh off a 30-32, 22-25, 25-17, 26-24, 15-13, reverse sweep of Ateneo De Manila University for a 1-1 win-loss record tied with UP. The Fighting Maroons are also shooting to secure a quarters incentive against the winless Blue Eagles at 5 p.m. UP needs to win in three or four sets to claim the quarters bonus in case of a three-way tie at 2-1 with UST and Letran. Ateneo also has a chance to snatch the incentive if it wins in straight sets or four sets and the Tigresses defeat the Lady Knights. Meanwhile, Adamson (0-2) and CSB (0-2) open the busy quadruple-header at 11 a.m. to determine their quarters position. All games in the competition are available live and on demand via PusoP.com and Solar Sports. TMT

Ferrari boss reminds quarrelling drivers that team comes first

SAO PAOLO, Brazil — Ferrari team chief Fred Vasseur on Friday said both of his quarrelling drivers had been reminded that the Italian team always comes first following a meeting at Interlagos. Speaking to reporters at a scheduled news conference following opening practice at the Sao Paulo Grand Prix, Vasseur confirmed that he met seven-time champion Lewis Hamilton and Charles Leclerc to discuss their clash and performance in Mexico last Sunday. "The guidelines are always the same," said Vasseur. "They are two competitors with a fighting spirit for sure, but they need to have respect for each other. "But mainly, and firstly, they need to respect the brand, the team, the people working at home, the people working on track. I think we are putting a lot of effort on this and the message was clear -- and will stay clear." Hamilton, who started from his first pole for the team, had made clear after the Mexican race that he felt Leclerc had been over-aggressive on the opening lap when they tangled and ran off track, wrecking Ferrari's hopes of victory. The British driver called for serious discussions and confirmed on Thursday that he remained frustrated and would not stop speaking his mind on the issues. The drivers had not met since the Mexico event as Leclerc returned to Monaco for the birth of his first child. Vasseur deflected claims, from Hamilton and others, that Leclerc races harder against his team-mates than others by citing his aggressive pass of four-time champion Max Verstappen of Red Bull in Texas. "If you have a look at what Charles did in Austin in the first sector, everybody said it was magic," he said. "The line is fine between the two, but he didn't crash into the other car." Vasseur added: "For sure, in this situation, we failed collectively because we were one and two and we didn't win the race at the end. That means that it's clear that we failed and we have to react. "But the conclusion of the meeting yesterday (Thursday) evening was a clear reminder that the Ferrari is coming first, is coming first for the brand, for the employees, for the Tifosi, and this we have to keep it in mind."
