Feb 8, 2023

Dr Dave Richards (09-585-0205) has updated his dental implant treatment services. His clinic, based in St Heliers, services all of Auckland, including St Heliers, Glendowie, Kohimarama, Mission Bay, Orakei, Meadowbank, and St Johns.

The practice’s updated services include the placement of titanium dental implants and ceramic or porcelain crowns for patients whose teeth have been damaged, infected, or are already missing. Since dental technology has improved dramatically in recent years, patients can regain both their proper bite function and their desired appearance - as dental implants are natural-looking, fully functional, and permanent: they should last for the patient’s lifetime.

Dr Richards now offers this service for any patient whose oral health condition merits dental implants: periodontal disease can be a complicating factor that requires other treatment methods. Dental implants offer many long-term benefits to patients: for example, they can help protect remaining teeth from shifting and becoming loose by filling in the remaining gaps, while maintaining the fullness of a patient’s facial structure for a more youthful, vibrant appearance.

The market for dental implants in New Zealand is still in its infancy, but it is growing rapidly. According to a report from the Dental Council of New Zealand, the number of people receiving dental implants has grown by more than 50% since 2009. This growth is primarily attributed to the increasing availability of dental implants, as well as the rising cost of traditional dental treatments.

After a review of the patient’s medical history and assuming he or she maintains healthy gums, Dr Richards and his team can initiate a treatment plan for dental implants. Once the implants are attached to the individual’s jawbone, there is typically a healing period of up to six months. Initially, a healing cap is placed over the implant before a permanent crown - the only part that is visible - is fitted to the implant.

Dr Richards also offers crowns and porcelain veneers. Porcelain veneers are a cosmetic dental procedure used to help improve the appearance of the front teeth - thin pieces of porcelain that are placed over the front of the teeth to cover any chips, gaps, discolouration, or other imperfections. Veneers are a longer-lasting alternative to traditional teeth whitening, and can also be used to change the shape or size of the teeth.

One happy patient commented: “Dave is a great dentist who is thorough, gentle, and reassuring. I needed extensive work after a long time avoiding dentists due to anxiety, and every visit was stress and pain-free. The whole team is warm and welcoming. Highly recommend.”

NCAA: San Beda escapes EAC to end crossover round with victory

MANILA, Philippines — San Beda University survived a late fourth-quarter rally pulled by Emilio Aguinaldo College (EAC), 89-86, to end the crossover round with a victory in the NCAA Season 102 men’s basketball tournament on Monday afternoon at the Filoil EcoOil Centre in San Juan City. The EAC Generals pulled a late 12-0 rally in the fourth quarter to take the lead and erase the nine-point lead of the San Bed Red Lions, 86-85, courtesy of EJ Castillo and Jude Bagay putting up the fight with one minute and 16 seconds remaining. However, Castillo committed an unsportsmanlike foul on RC Calimag, who took advantage of the opportunity and scored both of his free throws, 87-86. With four seconds remaining, Calimag made a trip to the charity stripe once more, sinking both of his free throws to give San Beda a three-point lead, 89-86. MJ Raymundo missed the game-tying shot that allowed San Beda to stretch its win streak over EAC to 28 games. The last time EAC won over San Beda was on Sept. 17, 2024. “We know EAC is going to go hard on the basket; that is something that we knew before heading to this game. But it’s different when you’re inside. We just need to toughen up. I know we were too soft in that fourth quarter when we were up,” head coach Yuri Escueta told the media after the game. The Red Lions ended the second round with a 6-3 win-loss record in Group A, while EAC fell to 3-6 in Group B. San Beda relied on Aldous Torculas, who made 19 points and seven rebounds, along with four assists. John Bonzalida added 12 points, while Jimuel Reyes and RC Calming made 11 points identically. EAC was led by Castillo’s 19 points and three assists.
