New York, United States - October 15, 2023 /PressCable/

Solar Car Club's latest launch takes a deep dive into the advanced technology that has turned sun-powered cars from a futuristic idea into a genuine mode of transport. From an exploration of photovoltaic cells to the impact of clean energy on an escalating climate crisis, readers are taken on an engaging voyage through what makes it all possible.

More details can be found at https://solarcarclub.com/the-science-behind-solar-powered-vehicles/

The new guide is part of Solar Car Club's extensive online database of solar technology information. The website makes for essential reading for car enthusiasts, environmentally-conscious commuters, and anyone interested in the intersection between sustainability and the technologies of today and tomorrow.

Photovoltaic cells, sometimes referred to as solar cells, convert light from the sun directly into electricity, and recent years have seen numerous manufacturers and car designers explore innovative ways to incorporate these cells into vehicle designs. This technology can be housed in vehicle roofs and windows, maximizing the available surface area for capturing sunlight.

The guide goes on to explain how cutting-edge battery technologies enable the storage of excess energy generated by photovoltaic cells. Energy is gathered during hours of peak sunlight which can then be released during nighttime hours or on cloudy days. A combination of direct solar power and stored energy allows for the uninterrupted operation and reliable performance of today's solar vehicles.

The expert also explains that one of the main challenges facing solar car developers is the issue of improving the efficiency of these types of batteries. By increasing the amount of energy that can be generated from sunlight and ensuring this energy is stored and delivered with minimal wastage, solar cars will become a more viable alternative to the fossil-fuel options that still dominate the vehicle market of today.

Readers are also given a rundown of some areas of development that have scientists, environmentalists, and motorists alike excited at the prospect of a future where the solar car takes center stage in transport provision. Along with the advent of more efficient battery technologies, integration with electric grids raises the possibility of solar cars sharing the excess energy they generate with the entire network.

These developments are complemented by the emergence of new lightweight carbon fiber composites to reduce the weight of vehicles and the rise of autonomous driving technology, Solar Car Club notes.

An excerpt from the guide reads, “Solar-powered vehicles offer numerous advantages that make them a promising option for sustainable transportation. With the use of photovoltaic cells, these vehicles harness the power of the sun to generate clean and renewable energy.”

MPBL: Pasay, Caloocan prevail as elimination stage ends

MANILA, Philippines — The Pasay Voyagers and Caloocan Batang Kankaloo bared their readiness for the playoffs with victories over different opponents in the SportsPlus MPBL (Maharlika Pilipinas Basketball League) 2026 Season elimination phase at the Pasay Astrodome. Pasay thwarted Pasig City, 78-69, in the nightcap while Caloocan bested Zamboanga Sikat, 82-78, in the opener of the double-header, ending the round-robin elimination phase of the two-division, 26-team tournament. The Voyagers improved to 14-11, similar to the Meycauayan Marilao Gems, but settled for fifth place as they lost to the Gems, 82-77, in their encounter. Pasay also qualified for the playoffs outright, along with sixth-ranked Ilagan Isabela (13-12). Pasay's Lennard Santiago posted 18 points, 4 rebounds and 2 steals, but Cyril Gonzales was chosen the SportsPlus best player with 17 points, 3 rebounds, 3 steals and 2 assists. Christian Fajarito supported with 14 points, including two triples, 4 assists and 3 rebounds. Sinking 9 of 18 triple attempts, the Voyagers led by as many as 58-39 before the Pasiguenos rallied to 72-67 midway through the fourth quarter. Pasig finished at 11-14 and eighth place in the North Division. Jeff Manday scored seven points in the last 1 minute and 41 seconds to lift Caloocan's record to 20-5 and third place in the North Division playoff race. Zamboanga finished 11-14 and ninth place in the South Division. Zamboanga led 76-73 after a drive by Paeng Are, but Manday, the MPBL's new 3-point king, came through in the clutch, drilling in a 3-pointer to knot the count, after which Eric Camson pushed Caloocan ahead with two charities. The 6-foot Manday finished off the demolition job with four more free throws against a breakaway layup by Zamboanga's Forthsky Padrigao. Manday tallied 15 points, 6 rebounds and 3 assists to earn best player honors over Kean Baclaan, with 13 points and 4 rebounds; Chris Bitoon, with 13 points and 4 assists; and Dom Escobar, with 10 points and 5 rebounds. Zamboanga drew 15 points, 3 assists and 2 rebounds from Are; 11 points, 13 rebounds and 2 steals from Joseph Gabayni; and 11 points and 5 rebounds from Brandon Wilson. The tournament resumes with the play-in stage at the Camaya Coast Events Center on Friday, featuring Valenzuela and Quezon City at 5 p.m., and host Bataan against Pasig at 7 p.m. TMT

Lawyer: Ex-NFL star Antonio Brown to avoid prison with reduced charge in attempted murder case

Lawyer: Ex-NFL star Antonio Brown to avoid prison with reduced charge in attempted murder case

MIAMI — Former NFL star wide receiver Antonio Brown plans to accept a plea deal that will have him avoid prison time on a reduced charge in an attempted murder case in Miami. His lawyer said Wednesday the agreement with prosecutors was too good to turn down. Brown is scheduled to appear in court on Sept. 30 to make the deal final. Defense attorney Mark Eiglarsh said Brown will plead no contest to aggravated assault. He will be sentenced to probation, and adjudication will be withheld, meaning Brown will not be considered a convicted felon, the attorney said. Brown could have faced up to 30 years in prison if convicted of the original attempted murder charge. Brown is accused of grabbing a handgun from a security staffer after a celebrity boxing match in Miami on May 16, 2025, and firing two shots at a man he had gotten into a fistfight with earlier, according to an arrest warrant. Zul-Qarnain Kwame Nantambu told investigators that one of the bullets grazed his neck. Attorney insists that Brown would have prevailed at trial “This was not an easy decision,” Eiglarsh said in a statement Wednesday. “Antonio believes in his innocence. He believes strongly in his Stand Your Ground defense, and he believes he would ultimately prevail at trial. But when prosecutors put an offer on the table that transforms a potential decades-long prison sentence into a significantly reduced charge and probation, there was simply no way he could reasonably turn it down.” Florida’s so-called Stand Your Ground law allows people who believe they face death or serious injury to use deadly force to defend themselves without a duty to retreat. Richard Cooper, an attorney for Nantambu, called the plea deal fair. “We are satisfied that justice is served. My client maintains what he said previously: that he forgives Brown and will not cooperate with law enforcement,” Cooper said in an email Wednesday. “We wish Mr. Brown good health and that he grows from this event.” Nantambu's attorneys have said he'd decided to forgive Brown In a previous statement, his attorneys said Nantambu, a devout Muslim, had made the decision to forgive Brown after “considerable reflection, prayer, and consultation with his family and counsel.” The Miami-Dade State Attorney’s Office declined to comment on Wednesday, with spokesperson Ed Griffith saying the details would be “fully clarified” at next week's hearing. Brown has said on social media that he was defending himself from an attack and that others were trying to steal jewelry from him. Brown, 38, spent 12 years in the NFL and was an All-Pro wide receiver who last played in 2021 for Tampa Bay, including winning a Super Bowl championship with quarterback Tom Brady. He spent much of his career with Pittsburgh. For his career, Brown had 928 receptions for more than 12,000 yards and accounted for 88 total touchdowns, counting punt returns and one pass. Brown has faced legal problems over the years Brown was extradited in November 2025 from Dubai, where he has business interests, after an arrest warrant on the attempted murder charge was issued in June 2025. Brown has dealt with several legal problems over the years. He previously had been accused of battery of a moving truck driver, several domestic violence charges, failure to pay child support and other incidents. During a 2021 game with Tampa Bay against the New York Jets, Brown took off his jersey, shoulder pads and gloves and ran off the field, leading to his release by the Buccaneers and effectively ending his football career. In a separate case, Nantambu was found guilty earlier this year of a misdemeanor charge of resisting an officer after police said he disrupted Kendrick Lamar’s Super Bowl halftime performance in 2025. Nantambu was among dozens of dancers on the field at Caesars Superdome in New Orleans when he ran across the field with a Sudanese flag that read “Sudan and Free Gaza.” He surrendered to authorities after an arrest warrant was obtained.

Carlos Yulo eyes Asian Games floor exercise gold

SPORTING two Olympic gold medals, three World Championships titles, and a slew of regional and continental championships, Carlos Yulo sets his sights on ruling the only tournament he hasn’t won yet — the Asian Games. Yulo guns for the men’s artistic gymnastics floor exercise gold medal at the Nagoya City General Gymnasium Rainbow Hall in the 20th edition of the Asiad in Japan on Thursday. The final is set at 4 p.m. in Manila, with Yulo favored to win the same event he ruled at the Paris Olympics, in addition to the vault apparatus. Emerging as the top qualifier last Monday with 14.600 points, “Caloy” would have to beat his younger brother Karl Eldrew in his gold medal bid, though. A rookie in the seniors level, Eldrew finished fourth in the qualifications with 13.966 points as he arranged a duel with his kuya (older brother) anew. At the Asian Championships last June, the 26-year-old Carlos claimed the floor exercise gold medal, besting the competition including the 18-year-old Eldrew, who snared the bronze. Besides Eldrew, the six other gymnasts aiming to deny Caloy the gold are defending champ Ryu Sunghyun of South Korea, Shoma Tsukiyama of Japan and Sun Wei of China, who placed second, third and fifth, respectively, in the qualifications. The other three finalists are Shinnosuke Oka of Japan, Milad Karimi of Kazakhstan and Zhang Boheng of China. If Caloy wins the gold, he will become the second Filipino athlete to rule the Olympics, World Championships, Asian Games and Southeast Asian Games after weightlifter Hidilyn Diaz. Should Caloy not win the gold in floor, he still has chances in the vault and parallel bars medal rounds set for Friday. Eldrew also has one more chance in the horizontal bar on Friday. Another Philippine gymnastics team mainstay Juancho Miguel Besana is competing in the vault final, too. At press time on Tuesday afternoon, Caloy and Eldrew were to join forces first alongside Besana, Zachary Nunez and Justine Ace De Leon in the team all-around final.

Eala takes on Prozorova in WTA 500 Singapore Open

Eala takes on Prozorova in WTA 500 Singapore Open

FILIPINO tennis ace Alexandra “Alex” Eala faces Russian Tatiana Prozorova in the round of 16 to begin her campaign at the WTA 500 Singapore Tennis Open at The Kallang on Thursday. The time and court for the second-round match were not yet available as of writing. Earning a first-round bye as the No. 3 seed, world No. 18 Eala finally sees action nearly three weeks after her third-round exit at the US Open. Eala fell to world No. 13 Jokic, 5-7, 6-3, 5-7, on Sept. 6. Meanwhile, world No. 180 Tatiana Prozorova defeated No. 152 Sofia Costoulas of Belgium in their first-round clash, 5-7, 7-6(2), 6-2, to earn the right to face Eala. The 22-year-old Prozorova said the 21-year-old is like an octopus when it comes to court coverage. “It’s a good opponent. Well, I can say most times she’s aggressive, but I can adjust during a match to what my opponent is doing. I can manage my game style in a way and adapt to her style,” said Prozorova. “I’m trying to be a little smarter than the opponent. There are a lot of challenges. She’s very good. She’s like an octopus. She runs from side to side, and she puts a lot of pressure on her opponent. Even if she is in a very uncomfortable situation, she will hit it as strongly as she can.” In a media availability where she was asked what she is looking forward to in the tournament, Eala mentions the Filipino community and the Southeast Asian culture. “I used to compete here very often as a kid,” said Eala, who will compete at the Asian Games in Japan right after Singapore. “There’s obviously a very huge Filipino community. I do have close relatives here that whenever I was in town, I’d go see. I think just Southeast Asian culture in general is very close-knit. “We find that sense of community in each other. So even the Southeast Asian women on tour, I find myself gravitating toward. We can relate on things like SEA Games, and we know that that doesn’t happen for all the other players.”

Alas Pilipinas: We’ll be back!

Alas Pilipinas: We’ll be back!

NINTH place was never the original dream for Alas Pilipinas Women at the Aichi-Nagoya 20th Asian Games, where they set out to contend for a medal. However, after early losses in group play ended their quarterfinal hopes, it became the highest possible finish — and one they claimed with authority. Head coach Taka Minowa challenged the team to reset their focus after dropping matches to powerhouse China (18-25, 22-25, 8-25) and Kazakhstan (29-27, 24-26, 25-23, 25-19). Shifted into the classification stage, the Filipinas were given a new objective: win out and secure ninth place. They executed the plan flawlessly, sweeping all three of their remaining matches. After decisive victories over Qatar (25-8, 25-2, 25-9) and Mongolia (25-13, 25-11, 25-20), Alas Pilipinas capped off their tournament with a straight-sets win against Hong Kong, 25-21, 25-9, 30-28, at the Okazaki Chuo Sogo Park Gymnasium on Tuesday night. Though missing out on the quarterfinals highlighted areas requiring growth — particularly consistency against elite opponents — the team views the experience as a crucial stepping stone. “Actually, we’re happy. Although that wasn’t our overall goal in the Asian Games, we’re happy with all our wins ... what we accomplished as a team and, of course, the learning experience,” said outside hitter Angel Canino, who reflected positively on her first Asian Games appearance alongside her veteran teammates. “It’s a huge achievement individually ... such an amazing experience to be with my older teammates and to be part of the Philippine national team, because some of them are people I really look up to,” she added. Bella Belen echoed the sentiment, noting that competing against the continent’s top squads exposed the gap they need to bridge moving forward. “It’s different. The level of play is really different. We learned so much, especially us younger players,” Belen shared. “We know there’s still room to improve. We need to elevate our level of play even more.” While the ninth-place finish fell short of their initial podium ambitions, the sweep in the placement round provided both progress and momentum. With young core players like Canino and Belen already setting their sights on future international tournaments, Alas Pilipinas leaves Nagoya with valuable experience and a clearer path toward becoming a true contender in Asia.

Scheffler seeks turnaround at Presidents Cup

Scheffler seeks turnaround at Presidents Cup

MEDINAH, Illinois — Scottie Scheffler is the undisputed No. 1 player in the world, a winner of 25 tournaments worldwide and three legs of the career Grand Slam, all within the last five years. It just doesn’t look that way when it comes to team competition. His record in the two Presidents Cups he has played is 3-5-1. Scheffler avoided a complete shutout in the Ryder Cup last year by beating Rory McIlroy in singles to go 1-4-0 for the week at Bethpage Black, lowering his record in those matches to 3-6-3. This is of little concern to Scheffler, or to US captain Brandt Snedeker. “Scottie Scheffler being Scottie Scheffler is the most important thing for us as a team,” Snedeker said on Tuesday (Wednesday in Manila) after another cool, cloudy day of practice at rain-softened Medinah. “We can’t ask him to do more than he can do. He can only deliver five points at his best if he goes out and plays unbelievable. We just want Scottie to go out there and be comfortable.” Snedeker was at Medinah in 2012 for the Ryder Cup when Tiger Woods didn’t win any of his four matches as Europe rallied to win. That was always the most curious part of Woods’ incomparable career — a world beater except in the Ryder Cup, where he had a career mark of 13-21-3. He fared much better in the Presidents Cup (27-15-1), a product of being on so many winning teams. Being the best in golf often comes with a target on the back, that extra level of motivation for the player — or players in team formats — trying to beat him. Scheffler made his Ryder Cup debut in 2021 before he had won on the PGA Tour. Most memorable that week was starting with four straight birdies to go 4 up in four holes and beating Jon Rahm, 4 and 3. Scheffler, a captain’s pick, was unbeaten in three matches at Whistling Straits. Remarkably, he went eight consecutive matches in both cups without winning (three matches were halved) until he and Russell Henley won the opening match at the 2024 Presidents Cup. Some of it Scheffler attributes to the fickle nature of match play over 18 holes. He has played well and lost, played mediocre and won. That happens to everyone. There’s another part of him, however, that wonders if the effort is in overdrive. “When you look at this format — and maybe my record hasn’t matched up to what I think that it should be — could it be trying too hard? I think that’s definitely a factor, for sure,” Scheffler said. “For me, it’s different in the sense that you also have a partner with you and you’re playing for somebody outside yourself, and that’s a lot different as well. “Striking the balance between how much do you care, I think that’s something I’m always trying to figure out,” he said. “Definitely for me, I think just trying less would be really important. It’s just one of those things that’s a lot easier said than done.” Scheffler has been playing practice rounds this week with Sam Burns, his best friend on the PGA Tour. They have yet to win a match as partners (0-3-1) in the Presidents Cup and Ryder Cup.
