Intermountain Health Gives Seven Tips for Moms to Prevent Falls During Pregnancy

September 23 is Falls Prevention Awareness Day, and Intermountain TOSH physical therapist and athletic trainer gives pregnant moms seven simple ways to keep their balance

(PRUnderground) September 22nd, 2023

September 23 is Falls Prevention Awareness Day, and Intermountain Health experts are offering suggestions to prevent people from falling down and getting hurt — including pregnant women.

If pregnant women feel a little clumsy,  they are not imagining it. During pregnancy there are a lot of changes to a mom’s body and body systems. There are changes in hormones, the body’s physiology, and anatomy. And those things naturally lead to a growing belly, weight gain, decreased abdominal muscle strength, a loosening of the ligaments and joints, and changes in the curvature of the spine.

All of these changes mean that when a person is pregnant, their center of gravity shifts, which affects their posture and their balance, which can increase the risk of falls. And falling during pregnancy can cause serious injuries to mom, baby, or pregnancy complications.

“A pregnant belly changes your center of mass. On top of that, your balance and coordination come from your core abdominal muscles, so as baby grows, the abdominals get stretched out, so the ability to use those muscles decreases. During pregnancy, your sense of balance and coordination are off and reaction time is delayed,” said Brittney Damaceno, a physical therapist at Intermountain Health’s Orthopedic Specialty Hospital.

A 2022 National Institutes of Health study found 27% of pregnant women experienced a fall during pregnancy. This is just about the same rate for women older than 70 years old who had a fall, which was 28%. Pregnant women are hospitalized 2.3 times more because of falling, compared with women of reproductive age. Falls account for approximately 24% of all hospitalizations due to injury during pregnancy.

Seven Simple Ways for Moms to Keep Their Balance During Pregnancy to Prevent Falls

  1. Practice good breathing

This not only regulates stress levels. It helps engage the core muscles. Breathe deeply through the nose and exhale through the mouth. Lift the pelvic floor muscles as you exhale. Pelvic floor muscles are the same muscles you use to stop the flow of urine.

  1. Stay as active as possible during pregnancy

Use your muscles as much as possible and stay active. The more fit and active you stay, your balance will be better. Walking is really good exercise for pregnant moms. Other types of low-impact exercise, like swimming or water aerobics are great for pregnant moms. Avoid contact sports or sports where there is a risk of falling. Stay in tune and listen to your body to determine the appropriate level of exertion.

  1. Exhale with exertion

It may sound counter-intuitive, but blow out as you’re lifting weights or anything else. This helps protect the pressure around the baby and reduces the pressure on the pelvic floor muscles.

  1. Sit on a big exercise ball to improve balance and core stability. This is much easier and safer for pregnant women than trying to balance on an uneven surface.
  1. Wear appropriate shoes for the setting, especially if it’s rainy or slippery.
  1. Use a handrail when going downstairs. When you look down, your gaze can be blocked by a growing belly.
  1. Watch out for loose rugs on the floor and use nightlights to light the way in the dark for those middle of the night visits to the bathroom.

Celine Marsh added eight points, Arah Panique had seven markers while Denesse Daylisan scored six for the Lady Bulldogs, who completed a sweep of their back-to-back assignments and inched closer to securing a playoffs seat.     NU found itself struggling at the start of the second frame and trailed the Lady Chiefs, 7-11, after a Samantha Maranan offspeed attack. The Lady Bulldogs answered with nine straight points capped by a Daylisan kill for a 16-11 lead to take control of the frame. EJ Obiena urges better facilities to sustain Philippine sports' golden era

EJ Obiena urges better facilities to sustain Philippine sports' golden era

MANILA, Philippines — Olympian EJ Obiena believes Philippine sports are in their golden era, but access to quality facilities remains a major limiting factor for athletes. The two-time Asian Games gold medalist emphasized the critical need for better support during a recent Committee on Sports hearing. “I think sports in general, accessibility is the key. I think Philippine sports are in their golden age right now. We have so many world-class athletes, and I am just very proud that I am part of this era. I hope it gets better and better,” Obiena said.  “I think what’s limiting us is the access to facilities. It is one of the reasons why I train outside, not just because of the knowledge there, but also the current situation of the facilities that we have.” Obiena understood that everyone is trying to upscale the sports program, but compared to the other countries, the scale of support is way too different. “I think everybody is doing their best. I have traveled from quite different countries, and I understand that the support in our country is not as big as what I said. In terms of the general budget…” Obiena trained at the University of Santo Tomas athletics team before he moved to Formia, Italy in 2014 to train under renowned Ukrainian coach Vitaly Petrov. He stayed in Italy for more than a decade, where it shaped him into the first-ever Filipino pole vaulter to compete in the Olympics in 2020. In 2026, Obiena moved to Athens, Greece, where he began training under coach Marcin Szczepanski alongside Emmanouil Karalis. He further shared that he holds a pole vault clinic with the brands he partnered with. A total of 21 young pole vaulters in Ilocos and around 18 in Tagum.  “This is just my small way… Hopefully, this will be an ongoing thing we can sustain… Continuous flow of athletes for our pole vaulting event, because I really want to make Philippines a powerhouse in this event, and hopefully in track and field as well.”

Jahns returns sharper, hungrier for PGT crown at Pueblo

Jahns returns sharper, hungrier for PGT crown at Pueblo

MANILA, Philippines — Keanu Jahns returns to the Philippine Golf Tour with his game a notch sharper and his hunger for victory even greater as he shoots for an elusive win in the circuit’s final stages. The ICTSI Pueblo de Oro Championship unwraps on Oct. 12 in Cagayan de Oro, with Jahns expected to put his long, powerful game to good use on Pueblo de Oro’s open layout and finally break into this year’s PGT winner’s circle. The Fil-German also brings with him a boost in confidence from his recent campaign in the DP World Tour Qualifying, where he came within two strokes of securing one of the coveted Top 13 spots. Although he fell short in the final round in Denmark, Jahns showed he had the game to contend, staying in the hunt through the first three rounds before wavering on the last day. More importantly, the experience gave him a valuable glimpse of the level required to compete on a bigger stage. Jahns hopes to carry that experience – and the lessons gained from it – into Pueblo de Oro, where he seeks to turn another strong showing into the victory that has eluded him this season. A three-time PGT winner last year, including the season-ending Match Play Championship, Jahns has come close in five starts this year but has yet to capture a title. He has posted three Top 5 finishes, highlighted by a third-place effort at Lakewood and a fourth-place finish at Pradera Verde. He also tied for fourth in his most recent PGT appearance at Summit Point before embarking on his bid to reach the lucrative DP World Tour through a series of qualifiers. But Jahns will have plenty of formidable challengers at Pueblo de Oro, where another fiercely contested four-day battle is expected to unfold. The last several PGT legs have produced tight, drama-filled finishes, and the most recent stop in Iloilo was no exception. Jhonnel Ababa endured a tournament-long test of will and character before displaying poise in the stretch run to outmaneuver Jeffren Lumbo and snap a two-year title drought in the circuit organized by Pilipinas Golf Tournaments, Inc. That victory gave the Apo ace added momentum heading into Pueblo de Oro, but a host of other contenders are equally motivated to claim a share of PGT glory with only three legs remaining this season, including the South Pacific and Apo legs, both set in Davao later this month. Aside from Jahns and Ababa, the field features a mix of seasoned champions and emerging contenders led by reigning Order of Merit winner Angelo Que, already a two-time champion this year, and Tony Lascuña, fresh from a pro-am tournament triumph. Former leg winners Rupert Zaragosa, Reymon Jaraula, Guido van der Valk and Lumbo are also expected to contend, along with Negros Occidental first-time champion Art Arbole. Russell Bautista, Ryan Monsalve, Jonas Magcalayo, Jeremy Tandoy and Ivan Yabut, meanwhile, are eager to test themselves against the established names and add more firepower to an already deep field. Foreign bidders Kim Tae Soo, Chonkoo Kang and Lee Song further add to the competitive mix, setting the stage for another high-quality, closely fought championship at Pueblo de Oro. TMT
