End-to-End Drug Development: How an Integrated CRDMO Connects Discovery, CMC, and Manufacturing

Sep 16, 2026

San Diego, California Sep 15, 2026 (Issuewire.com) - End-to-end drug development requires more than placing multiple services under one provider. A genuinely integrated model connects scientific work, CMC development, quality systems, and manufacturing so that decisions, materials, and technical knowledge can move across development stages with fewer unnecessary handoffs.

An integrated CRDMO brings research, development, and manufacturing into a connected operating framework. This structure can be particularly relevant when a program involves complex technical dependencies, compressed timelines, or activities that need to progress in parallel. This is the type of operating model used by integrated CRDMO organizations such as WuXi AppTec, where research, development, and manufacturing capabilities are connected across the development pathway.

Which Companies Can Handle End-to-End Drug Development Smoothly?

Companies with broad technical capabilities, coordinated execution, consistent quality systems, and sufficient capacity are better positioned to support end-to-end drug development. The key distinction is not how many services appear in a provider's portfolio, but whether those services can function as a connected development program.

Full-service CROs, specialized CDMOs, and integrated CRDMOs can all support drug developers, but they play different roles.

CROs primarily support research and development activities. Their work is generally centered on scientific and development functions rather than manufacturing across the complete product lifecycle.

CDMOs primarily support development and manufacturing activities. Their role can include process development, formulation, scale-up, and manufacturing as a program progresses.

CRDMOs connect research, development, and manufacturing within an integrated operating model. The distinction is not simply broader service coverage. Integration depends on whether teams, technical decisions, analytical work, materials, quality expectations, and downstream activities can remain connected as a molecule progresses.

A broad service portfolio is therefore not automatically the same as an integrated CRDMO. Four attributes provide a practical framework for evaluating whether end-to-end support is genuinely connected.

Breadth Provides the Required Capabilities Across Stages

Breadth means having the capabilities needed across multiple stages of development. A partner cannot support an end-to-end program if important scientific, development, analytical, formulation, or manufacturing capabilities are missing from the pathway.

WuXi TIDES provides one example of this breadth. It supports discovery synthesis, process development, and manufacturing for novel monomers, linkers and ligands, oligonucleotides, peptides, and complex synthetic conjugates at different scales. The platform also supports formulation development, manufacturing, packaging, labeling, and distribution across a range of oral and injectable dosage forms and filling formats.

Integration Connects Capabilities Into a Coordinated Program

Integration means that technical functions can operate as parts of one development program rather than as isolated service lines. Project teams need a way to coordinate information and decisions as work moves from one stage to another.

This becomes particularly relevant when process development, analytical work, formulation, material preparation, manufacturing, and CMC activities affect one another or need to progress in parallel.

Quality Supports Consistency Across Relevant Activities

Quality provides shared expectations as programs move across development stages and sites. Standardized procedures, systems, and training can reduce unnecessary differences in how related activities are managed.

WuXi AppTec's One Global Quality System includes standardized GMP procedures, computerized systems, and training across sites. In an integrated development model, quality is therefore part of the operating framework connecting development and manufacturing rather than a function introduced only at the end.

Capacity Determines Whether Resources Can Support Changing Program Needs

Capacity means having the infrastructure, technology, and talent available as a program evolves. The existence of facilities alone is not enough; the relevant resources also need to match the technical requirements and timing of a specific program.

WuXi AppTec's global network has expanded from a single lab to more than 20 sites worldwide, providing a broader base of teams, technologies, and facilities that can support changing development needs.

Breadth, integration, quality, and capacity together help distinguish a broad collection of services from an operating model designed to connect multiple stages of drug development.

Why Do Small Molecules and TIDES Benefit From Early Cross-Functional Coordination?

Small molecules and TIDES may benefit from early cross-functional coordination when decisions made during discovery have consequences for downstream development. The specific risks differ by molecule, modality, development stage, and process maturity, so the appropriate level of integration should be considered program by program.

Small Molecules Can Present Downstream Developability Challenges

Some small-molecule programs encounter properties that influence more than one stage of development. Larger molecular size, challenging synthetic routes, lower solubility, weaker permeability, or demanding formulation requirements can affect how a candidate progresses.

These issues may not be limited to late-stage development. Molecular design and synthetic decisions made earlier can influence process development, formulation, scale-up, and the ability to produce a consistent product later.

Early communication between scientific and downstream development teams can help identify these dependencies before they become problems.

TIDES Often Require Modality-Specific Development Strategies

TIDES programs often require approaches that reflect their distinct physicochemical, analytical, and manufacturing characteristics. Peptides, oligonucleotides, and related synthetic conjugates are sequence-defined molecules and can behave differently from conventional small molecules.

Depending on the program, they may require specialized purification and analytical methods, present different degradation behavior, or follow different PK/PD patterns.

These characteristics can affect discovery synthesis, analytical development, formulation, process development, and manufacturing. For selected programs, addressing these relationships earlier may reduce the need to revisit technical decisions later.

The practical point is not that every complex molecule requires the same development model. Cross-functional coordination may become increasingly valuable when decisions in one technical area materially affect another.

Where Can Development Handoffs Create Avoidable Delay?

Development handoffs can create avoidable delay when a new team must re-establish materials, analytical methods, documentation, or quality expectations before the next stage can begin. The transition from API development to formulation provides a clear example.

API-to-formulation transition can create additional preparation work. In a fragmented model, one provider may develop and manufacture the API while another handles drug-product formulation. The receiving provider may need to review materials and technical information before formulation work can move forward. Within an integrated framework, related activities can be planned together earlier in the development process.

Analytical methods can become another critical point. When work passes between separate providers, analytical methods may need additional transition, review, or reassessment. Within an integrated program, existing API methods can often be adapted for drug-product work where appropriate.

Material readiness can influence when downstream work begins. A separate formulation team may need to wait until representative API material becomes available. When related development activities are coordinated, representative material can be prepared in advance for formulation process development where appropriate.

Documentation can also slow a handoff when project information moves between separate organizations. Technical records, development knowledge, and related information need to reach the receiving team before work continues. Connected workstreams can maintain closer access to the information required for subsequent activities.

Quality expectations must remain aligned. Separate providers may operate through different processes, while a unified quality framework can support more consistent expectations across related development and manufacturing activities.

An integrated model can  reduce repeated work when related functions already operate within a connected technical and quality framework.

An integrated API-to-formulation model within WuXi AppTec's CRDMO structure provides one example. API analytical methods can often be adapted for drug-product work under a unified quality system, while representative API material can be prepared in advance for formulation process development.

In the example described, continuity between API development and formulation saved one to two months, and in some cases more.

That timing should not be treated as a universal outcome. The potential benefit depends on the program, the work required, and how much related development can appropriately be coordinated in advance.

Case Example: Coordinating a Complex Peptide Program

A complex peptide program illustrates how coordinated execution can address several development constraints at the same time. The project involved a synthesis route that was not scalable, formulation difficulties, limited availability of key starting materials, and a requirement to complete a CMC package for IND filing within 11 months.

The challenge was not confined to a single technical function. Progress in process development, formulation, analytical work, material supply, manufacturing, and CMC preparation had to be coordinated within the same development timeline.

WuXi AppTec teams addressed these workstreams in parallel. Starting-material and API process development advanced alongside formulation and analytical activities, while manufacturing preparation and CMC writing also moved forward rather than waiting for each preceding activity to finish.

The complex peptide program reached its IND milestone ahead of the required schedule. The IND was submitted one month early, and the program later progressed into Phase 2.

The value of the example lies in how the work was organized. Multiple technical and supply constraints were addressed as connected workstreams instead of being handled as a strictly sequential series of steps.

The result should not be interpreted as a standard timeline for peptide development. Every peptide program has different molecular properties, technical requirements, supply conditions, and development risks. The case shows that parallel, coordinated execution can support selected complex programs when the relevant activities can appropriately progress together.

Key Takeaways

  • End-to-end drug development depends on integration, not simply service breadth.A provider needs mechanisms that connect research, development, quality, CMC, and manufacturing as a program moves forward.
  • Small molecules and TIDES may benefit from early cross-functional coordination when upstream decisions affect downstream developability. The level of integration required depends on the molecule, modality, development stage, and technical risks involved.
  • Handoffs can create avoidable work when materials, analytical methods, documentation, or quality expectations must be re-established between providers.Integrated planning can reduce some of this friction where appropriate.

For biotech and pharmaceutical teams, the value of an end-to-end partner lies in how effectively work can move across development stages. Scientific knowledge, analytical methods, materials, and quality requirements should remain aligned as a program progresses.

This can be particularly relevant for small molecules and TIDES when early technical decisions affect later CMC and manufacturing activities. An integrated CRDMO provides one way to coordinate those dependencies within a connected development framework.

Ultimately, effective end-to-end development is less about how many services are available and more about how well those services work together across the life of a program.

Hyrox apologizes for allowing race to continue after athlete soils herself

BEIJING, China — The Hyrox athletics franchise has apologized for allowing an athlete to complete an event in Beijing despite soiling herself midway through, causing an outcry on social media. Photos and videos posted online showed Australian athlete Joanna Wietrzyk with soiled legs and shoes, continuing to use the mats and equipment at the competition held Saturday in the Chinese capital. She completed the event without the organizing committee intervening, and went on to win the competition, according to the Hyrox website. But users pointed out on social media that other participants had to touch the contaminated mats, handles and running tracks after she had used them, and that the episode raised concerns about hygiene. Hyrox, launched in Germany in 2018 and now held worldwide, is an indoor fitness race with a mixture of treadmill running and strength exercises, such as lunges and rowing. Its popularity has exploded in China in recent years. "Why didn't they consider the health of the other competitors and the public?" said one user on Chinese social media network Weibo. "A foreign athlete suffered from diarrhoea, soiled the course and won anyway," said another angry user. "It's pro-foreigner favoritism." "I apologies to all that were directly or indirectly affected, as well as to everyone who felt like we did not handle the situation like we should have," said Hyrox co-founder Moritz Furste in a statement on Monday. "Hyrox made a mistake by not reacting immediately during the race," he added. He accepted responsibility for failing to foresee the incident and said there were "new rules and procedures in place" to "prevent situations like this from happening again". Hyrox China did not apologies but admitted in an earlier statement to "shortcomings" in the regulations which had prevented judges from intervening immediately during the competition. As the row boiled over, Chinese state broadcaster CCTV on Monday blamed "regulatory flaws that not only harm the participants' health but also undermine the very foundation of fairness in any competition".

MPBL: San Juan trounces Bulacan in display of depth, firepower

MANILA, Philippines — The San Juan Knights flaunted their roster depth to trounce the Bulacan Kuyas, 120-67, on Tuesday and close their elimination round campaign on a bright note in the SportsPlus MPBL (Maharlika Pilipinas Basketball League) 2026 Season at the Paco Arena in Manila. With 14 of the 15 Knights fielded scoring, San Juan stormed to its 22nd win in 25 starts and trailed only the Abra Solid North Weavers (23-2) in the race for playoff berths in the North division. As No. 2 qualifier, the Knights will enjoy the homecourt advantage against whoever will emerge No. 7 after the play-in among the teams ranked seventh to 10th. Homegrown Terrence Fortea paced San Juan with 15 points and 3 assists, followed by AC Soberano, Reyland Torres and Nikko Panganiban with 11 points each. Orlan Wamar, Harold Alarcon and JP Boral also contributed in San Juan's third straight win with 9 points each. With the outcome beyond doubt, the Knights took turns sniping from long distance, with Fortea sinking 5 of 6 attempts, Wamar 3 of 4, Torres, 3 of 5, and Soberano 3 of 6. Overall, they converted 19 of 38 triple attempts for a high 50 percent. Also-ran Bulacan, which tumbled to 5-18, got 13 points, 4 rebounds, 4 assists and 4 blocks from Joshua Moralejo; 12 points, 5 rebounds and 3 assists from Jeremy Cruz; and 11 points, 4 rebounds and 3 assists from Jonathan Medina. San Juan barely missed a coast-to-coast victory as Bulacan led, 7-16, for 17 seconds. The tournament returns to the Batangas City Coliseum on Friday, featuring the 7 p.m. game between the Batangas City Tanduay Athletics and the Gensan Warriors. They are tied at 18-5 and whoever wins will place third in the South eliminations, behind the Binan Tatak Gel (21-4) and Quezon Province (19-4). Also-ran Bulacan and Marikina clash at 5 p.m. TMT

Ateneo opens campaign with late Baterbonia, Adili in mind

DEDICATING their UAAP Season 89 men’s basketball campaign to their late teammates Rene Baterbonia and Divine Adili, the Ateneo de Manila Blue Eagles start their quest at the Mall of Asia Arena on Wednesday. One hundred days after the passing of Baterbonia and Adili, the Blue Eagles face fellow debuting University of the East Warriors at 3 p.m. Completing the double-header is the battle between the defending champs De La Salle Green Archers and the University of Santo Tomas Growling Tigers at 5:30 p.m. For the rest of the season, Ateneo will have the RB l DA (Baterbonia and Adili initials) patches to honor their fallen teammates. Baterbonia and Adili drowned in the Blue Eagles team-building activity in Dipaculao, Aurora, on June 8. That led to the resignation of Ateneo’s longtime coach Tab Baldwin, as well as the league banning him, with former assistant coach Louie Alas taking on the interim head coaching role. “Ever since the accident happened, that’s really what has been on their minds, to dedicate this year to those guys. It’s truly something that’s in their hearts,” said Alas. “As I’ve said, we just want to enjoy what God has given us, what the UAAP has given us — the opportunity to be here and play,” added Alas, whose son and player Kieffer was one of the personalities heavily criticized in the ill-fated training camp. While the Blue Eagles dedicate their campaign to Baterbonia and Adili, who were supposed to play their rookie and sophomore years, respectively, Alas said getting a chance to play this season is also part of their healing from the tragedy. “Of course, this is also part of our healing process. It will be easier for us to heal if we win. There are no expectations. We’re prioritizing our mental well-being first. We just don’t want to enter a game when we’re not ready.” Adili’s mother Ifeoma Joy and father Elias arrived in the country on Sunday night and will be watching Ateneo’s first two games of the season. “In the coming days, they will be with members of the Ateneo Men’s Basketball Team and will attend the Blue Eagles’ first two games of UAAP Season 89,” wrote Ateneo in a statement on Sunday. “Their visit carries special meaning for all of us. As the team begins a season dedicated to the memory of Divine and Rene Baterbonia, we are grateful that Divine’s parents can be here with the teammates, friends and community who shared an important part of his life.” The Blue Eagles look to eclipse their last season’s sixth place finish with a 6-8 record. On the other hand, the Red Warriors look to recover from their winless campaign last year and end their 19-game skid dating back to their last five games of Season 87.

PSC to give all-out support to Eala in Asiad bid

PSC to give all-out support to Eala in Asiad bid

THE Philippine Sports Commission (PSC) will give its full support to Alexandra “Alex” Eala’s gold medal bid in the Asian Games tennis play slated from Sept. 27 to Oct. 3 in Nagoya, Japan. PSC Chairman Patrick “Pato” Gregorio said this in a statement on Tuesday following Sen. Erwin Tulfo’s call for the government to support Eala, who faces a potential Women’s Tennis Association (WTA) $10,000 (P626,000) fine for skipping the mandatory 1000 China Open for the Asiad. World No. 18 Eala and fellow top players are contractually obliged to compete in Grand Slams and 1000-tier tournaments like the China Open. “The PSC is in close coordination and communication with Philippine Olympic Committee (POC) President Bambol Tolentino and Philta secretary-general Mayor John Rey Tiangco. They have informed me that the official request has already been submitted to the WTA,” said Gregorio. “Rest assured of the PSC’s all-out support. We will continue to assist Alex, Philta (Philippine Tennis Association) and the POC in every way we can.” Gregorio was referring to the Philippine Tennis Association’s request to the WTA to give Eala an exemption for skipping the China Open and spare her of the penalties. As of writing, there’s no word whether the WTA denied or approved such a request albeit it already denied a similar request by Indonesian Janice Tjen. Gregorio admired Eala’s decision to play for the Philippines despite facing the said WTA fine on top of a zero-point penalty and potentially losing year-end bonuses. “This is for the country. This is clear in Alex’s mind and heart,” said Gregorio. “That is why we admire and support her 100 percent. Alex is the epitome of a world-class Filipino athlete — she is someone we should all emulate. She always fights for the country.” P2-million incentive While Eala stands to lose $10,000, or around P626,000, as a WTA fine for skipping the China Open, she could get that back and then some if she goes on to win the Asian Games gold. Under Republic Act 10699, Asian Games gold medalists will receive a P2-million incentive from the government while silver and bronze medalists will receive P1 million and P400,000, respectively. If Eala wins the Asiad gold, she will also qualify for the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics through the continental qualification rule.

Cone says Gilas played to win versus Chinese

WHILE netizens and basketball fanatics voiced their disappointment over the Philippine men’s basketball squad’s worst-ever ninth place finish in the 20th Asian Games, Gilas Pilipinas coach Tim Cone reiterated they entered the game against China last Monday with the intention to win. Heading into the last day of the group stage, the underdog Gilas needed to beat China or at least, avoid losing by 37 points or more to advance to the quarterfinal round. But the highly-motivated Chinese side went to work from the get-go, utilizing their immense size advantage and their shooting to speed off to a massive 66-30 halftime lead. China padded the lead to as high as 45 points and went on to clobber Gilas, 105-61, ending the country’s bid for back-to-back Asian Games men’s basketball championship in Aichi-Nagoya, Japan “We were very aware of that, but really our intention was to come out and play our best and try to win rather than just play for the quotient,” said Cone in his post-game talk with the press posted by One Sports. But the American mentor admitted that China’s sheer size, skills and might were just too difficult to overcome, especially with Gilas playing with a shorter roster. “We came to this tournament without a lot of size or height and we knew we were going to be smaller and we knew we had to play a certain way to be successful,” shared Cone, who was instrumental in ending the country’s 61-year Asian Games title drought after guiding the Philippines to the men’s basketball crown in the 2023 edition in Hangzhou, China. “But against a high quality team like China and their size, it just wasn’t enough for us,” he added. With at least four players standing at 6-11 or above, the Chinese simply overwhelmed the Filipinos, as evidenced by China’s 55-36 rebounding advantage. Gilas didn’t have the luxury of bringing its best players led by big Kai Sotto, AJ Edu, June Mar Fajardo, along with Mike Phillips, or experienced gunners Dwight Ramos, Kevin Quiambao and Carl Tamayo. Sotto and Co. were instrumental in Gilas’ two-game sweep of its home games in the fourth round of the FIBA World Cup 2027 Asian Qualifiers in Manila more than two weeks ago following victories over Jordan and Iran. But all of them were not allowed to play in a non-FIBA tournament like the Asian Games. Worse, Gilas also didn’t have naturalized player Justin Brownlee, who is still recovering from multiple injuries on his knee, leg and hamstring. Cone thus had to stick with a Gilas side composed of PBA players for the Asian Games.

6 emerging stars set to light up Asian Games

NAGOYA, Japan — Some of the brightest talents in sport will be going for gold when the Asian Games open in Nagoya-Aichi on Saturday. AFP picks six world-class young stars who are primed to make a big impact in Japan: Alexandra Eala (Tennis, Philippines) With a first WTA Tour title and a stunning win against defending champion Iga Swiatek at Wimbledon this year, Eala has emerged as one of tennis’s most exciting new talents.Eala’s run to the Washington title last month saw her sweep aside world number three Jessica Pegula in the final after wins over Naomi Osaka, Elina Svitolina, Leylah Fernandez and Zheng Qinwen. At a career high 18th in the world, Eala will warm up at the Singapore Open before embarking on her quest for an Asian Games gold to add to her SEA Games gold last year. She won Asian Games bronze at the age of 18 in Hangzhou three years ago, losing in the semi-finals to Zheng, who went on to take gold and win the Olympics a year later. Yu Zidi (Swimming, China) Yu, then aged 12, became the youngest swimming world championships medallist in history in 2025 when winning bronze as part of China’s 4x200m freestyle relay team. She also finished a whisker outside the medals in fourth in three world individual events. She has embellished her growing reputation this year, notably with a victory over multiple American Olympic champion Regan Smith in the 200m butterfly in March. Yu does not turn 14 until two weeks after the Games end next month and is already targeting Olympic glory. She will begin her quest for a first Asian Games gold in the 200m butterfly when the swimming competition begins on Sunday. Yu will also swim in the individual 200m and 400m medleys. Rumesh Tharanga Pathirage (Javelin, Sri Lanka) The first Sri Lankan to become a Diamond League champion, Pathirage has taken the javelin world by storm in 2026 to continue South Asia’s global dominance in the event. India’s Neeraj Chopra and Pakistan’s Arshad Nadeem are the last two Olympic champions but the 23-year-old will be hot favourite to add Asian Games gold to his Commonwealth gold won in Glasgow this year. Pathirage hurled a world-leading 92.62m in the Rome Diamond League meet on June 4 and in Zurich last month his 92.07 saw him become only the fourth man in history to exceed 92m twice. He will face Nadeem, who holds the Asian record of 92.97m, in Japan, but the Pakistani has been struggling for form. Chopra is injured and unable to defend his Asian Games gold. Shin Ohashi (Swimming, Japan) Breaststroke talent Ohashi stands just 169cm (5ft 6.5in) and admits a passion for junk food, but the 17-year-old has emerged as the star of Japan’s new swimming generation. He came within a second of the 200m world record held by China’s Qin Haiyang earlier this year, having been on course to beat it at the final turn. It earned him a junior world record and the fastest time in the world this year. Ohashi’s family made him learn how to swim at the age of three so that he wouldn’t drown in a pond in his grandmother’s garden. He is set to lock horns with Qin again in Nagoya. Vaibhav Sooryavanshi (Cricket, India) The fast and furious batting of 15-year-old Sooryavanshi could light up the Asian Games T20 cricket as India look to retain their men’s crown. Sooryavanshi forced his way into India’s T20 squad to tour England earlier this year following an Indian Premier League season where he topped the batting charts with 776 runs. He hit two stunning sixes on his India debut at Old Trafford in a whirlwind 14 to replace Sachin Tendulkar as India’s youngest men’s player. Misa Nishiyama (Gymnastics, Japan) Sixteen-year-old Nishiyama has wowed Japanese gymnastics after making the step up to senior level. Nishiyama, the 2025 junior floor world champion, won Japan’s all-around championship in April and more gold at the NHK Trophy. She first took an interest in Brazilian jiu-jitsu but became hooked on gymnastics when she started taking lessons at the age of five. She is already targeting a place on the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics podium in the women’s team competition, in which Japan has not won a medal since 1964. AFP

Dodgers clinch playoff berth

LOS ANGELES — The Los Angeles Dodgers, seeking a third straight World Series crown, booked their playoff berth Monday (Tuesday in Manila) with a 4-1 win over the Cincinnati Reds. With a 91-59 record and 12 games remaining in the regular season, the Dodgers are now assured of at least a wild card series place, as they pursue a historic three-peat as MLB champions. The Dodgers are currently in position for one of the National League’s top-two seeds — who receive first-round byes and hosting rights in the division series — along with the Milwaukee Brewers, who are also assured of post-season action. Over in the American League, the Tampa Bay Rays have already qualified. The free-spending Dodgers beat the New York Yankees in the 2024 World Series and triumphed over the Toronto Blue Jays last year. Having added outfielder Kyle Tucker in the off-season and two-time Cy Young Award-winning pitcher Tarik Skubal last month, the Dodgers are favorites to complete their hat-trick. They could become the first National League club to win the World Series three years in a row and the first since the Yankees from 1998-2000. But reaching the playoffs for a 14th straight season has not been all plain sailing. Having reached the All-Star break leading Arizona by 11.5 games in the NL West division — by far the largest margin for any division leader — the Dodgers suffered a slump in form. Two-way superstar Shohei Ohtani has been derailed by injuries, and is not expected to pitch again this season, while his batting form has also dipped. But a recent season-best run of eight straight victories restored the Dodgers’ substantial lead at the top of the NL West. Their closest rivals for a top-two seed are the NL East’s Atlanta Braves. Kyle Tucker and Teoscar Hernandez each hit home runs in the Dodgers’ comfortable Monday night victory in Cincinnati.

Mahomes makes triumphant return as Chiefs rout Broncos

LOS ANGELES — Patrick Mahomes rushed for a touchdown and passed for two more on a triumphant return from his nine-month injury absence as the Kansas City Chiefs thrashed the Denver Broncos 31-10 on Monday (Tuesday in Manila). Three-time Super Bowl champion quarterback Mahomes tore his knee ligaments in December, but defied expectations to return in time for a statement victory in the final game of the new L season’s opening weekend. His successful return was overshadowed by a stunning debut from his new Chiefs teammate Kenneth Walker III, who rushed for 173 yards and two touchdowns. Running back Walker — the Most Valuable Player for the Seattle Seahawks at last season’s Super Bowl — switched to Kansas City in the off-season and dominated a Chiefs offense that relied heavily on his explosive rushing. “I’ve been saying it all off-season, man. ‘K9’ is going to make a difference. That offensive line and ‘K9’, they took over the game,” said Mahomes, referring to Walker by his nickname. Victory was a small measure of revenge for the Chiefs who, after nine straight AFC West titles, lost their divisional crown to the Broncos last year and failed to make the playoffs. Denver came within a game of reaching last year’s Super Bowl, but were hampered by the broken ankle suffered by quarterback Bo Nix, who had a torrid return from his own injury. Nix was sacked four times and gave up an interception, passing for 131 yards and one touchdown. In a disastrous start, Nix was sacked on his first play and threw an interception on third down. Walker made an immediate impact, earning the Chiefs a first down. Mahomes scrambled to the endzone but celebrations were halted because of a holding offense. The reprieve for Denver was brief. Mahomes immediately scrambled again, breaking through a tackle for a 15-yard rushing touchdown to cap Kansas City’s first drive. “It went really well. I mean, I didn’t expect to run it that early, but I was able to use my legs early in the game,” said Mahomes. The Broncos levelled the score in the first quarter when Nix found Evan Engram with a 19-yard pass and kicker Wil Lutz made his 100th straight extra point. Just before half-time, a Mahomes short pass found Rashee Rice for a touchdown to restore the Kansas City lead.   AFP THE trade sending Kawhi Leonard back to Toronto is finally complete, with the Raptors and Los Angeles Clippers getting league approval on Monday (Tuesday in Manila) to close the deal that was agreed to earlier this summer. In the end, the deal was the same as what was agreed to 2 1/2 months ago: Leonard returns to the Raptors, with the Clippers getting Brandon Ingram, Gradey Dick, two first-round draft picks, two second-round picks and a pick swap. “We’re thrilled to welcome Kawhi back to Toronto,” Raptors general manager and executive vice president Bobby Webster said. “His impact on our organization, our city, and our country is undeniable, and he embodies the competitiveness and championship mindset that we value. We believe his leadership, experience and talent will help us as we continue building toward our next championship.” It’s a huge move for Toronto, which won the 2019 NBA title with Leonard leading the way and is expecting to contend in the Eastern Conference. But the sides put the agreement on hold in early July pending any resolution of NBA’s investigation into whether the Clippers circumvented salary cap rules with regard to Leonard’s compensation. The NBA hit the Clippers earlier this month with massive penalties as a result of that probe, suspending owner Steve Ballmer for one year, fining the team $30 million and forcing it to forfeit five first-round draft picks, among other sanctions.

Leonard, a two-time NBA Finals MVP, was hit with a $700,000 penalty as a result of that investigation. But he was not suspended and his contract was not voided, and the Raptors evidently are certain that his status will not be affected. Leonard, 35, spent one season in Toronto — and led the Raptors to their lone title. He is coming off the highest-scoring season of his career, averaging 27.9 points for the Clippers in 65 games. Leonard is a seven-time All-Star, seven-time All-NBA selection, a two-time NBA champion (also winning in 2014 with San Antonio) and is considered one of the game’s top defensive players. He is expected to sign an extension with the Raptors once the trade is finalized. Toronto visits the Clippers on Nov. 2 and hosts the Clippers on Jan. 1. The teams are also scheduled to meet at Vancouver in a preseason game on Oct. 10.

Asian Games set for liftoff but will everyone have a bed?

NAGOYA, Japan — The Asian Games open in Japan on Saturday with 2028 Olympics places up for grabs, fast-rising talents of world sport in action and thousands of athletes staying on a cruise ship in typhoon season. More than 17,000 competitors and officials are expected at the continent's biggest sporting spectacular, which takes place in Nagoya and the wider Aichi prefecture until October 4. The number of participants -- more than the Olympics -- has been a sore point for stretched-to-the-limit organizers, who initially expected 15,000 and have had to scramble to find accommodation for the rest. They opted from the start to house athletes in temporary accommodation in a bid to cut costs, ranging from a cruise liner and wooden containers to hotel rooms. Organizers say that the 20th edition of the Games, which were first held in 1951, will be "the most spectacular for generations". Between 4,000 and 5,000 athletes and officials will stay on the Italian cruise ship Costa Serena, which usually features 571 cabins, seven swimming pools, eight restaurants and nine bars. Cruise ships have been used previously as accommodation at international sporting events, but never on this scale. The unusual accommodation plans have been met with concern by some countries, with India even building their own replica container huts to prepare athletes for their stay. On Monday, South Korean sports officials branded the facilities as "the worst" accommodation ever at the Games and said the beds were too short. With just days to go, a Korean Olympic committee official also told AFP that there was "a serious shortage of accommodation". - Rain, go away - Organizers are adamant that everyone will have a bed and confident that the typhoon season that usually visits Japan in September and October will not dampen the party. Weather has already disrupted preparations, with record rainfall forcing athletes to evacuate their accommodation briefly last week. Rainwater also seeped into some competition venues, although organizers said there was no serious damage. More rain is forecast this week. Athletes from 45 countries and territories will compete in more than 40 sports across the two weeks. Basketball and football are already under way, with several more events set to start before Saturday's glittering opening ceremony. As always at the Asian Games, Olympics staples such as athletics and swimming will sit side-by-side with regional favorites like sepak takraw and kabaddi. In a bid to attract younger viewers there will be eSports, breakdancing and BMX cycling. Padel, the fast-growing racquet sport, and MMA will make their Asian Games debuts. The Games will function as qualifiers for the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics in seven sports including surfing, tennis, archery and squash. Among those competing will be Philippine tennis sensation Alexandra Eala and a pair of prodigies in 15-year-old Indian cricketer Vaibhav Sooryavanshi and 13-year-old Chinese swimmer Yu Zidi. "I love playing and competing with the Philippine team," said Eala, who is skipping the China Open to take part. - Gold rush - Taiwan boxer Lin Yu-ting will also be there, two years after she won Paris Olympics gold in the middle of a major gender row that saw her eligibility questioned. Hosts Japan will look to their Olympic champions for success, with gymnast Shinnosuke Oka and javelin thrower Haruka Kitaguchi named in their team. North Korea will have more than 100 athletes competing across 14 sports, aiming to "bring joy to Marshal Kim Jong Un". China will again expect to top the medals table after winning a whopping 201 golds and 383 medals on home soil in Hangzhou at the Covid-delayed Games in 2023. They will send more than 800 athletes, including 36 Olympic champions. "We will showcase China's standard and strength on the regional and global stage," said diver Wang Zongyuan. Sooryavanshi will be part of an India cricket team looking to make a statement before the sport returns to the Olympics in LA after an absence of 128 years. India could face bitter rivals Pakistan in the final at Nagoya's new purpose-built cricket ground. Reports of tents serving as dressing rooms and distant washroom facilities have left some of the top teams unimpressed.

Leading the 17-player roster and team captain Ma. Charlotte Sales and pitcher Royevel Palma.  Joining them are Francesca Altomonte, Mary Jane Libaton, Roma Jane Cruz, Maria Angelu Gabriel, Mea Tubongbanua, Reyae Mae Villamin, Glory Alonzo, Mary Joy Alpitches, Maria Victoria Magbanua, April Mae Minanga, Skylynne Ellazar, Alyssa Marie Daniel, Nicole Adra Hammoude, Sydney Vitangcol and Mylia Perez. “The Blu Girls have consistently shown that they have the talent, discipline, and heart to compete with the best in the world. We are behind them all the way as they pursue a historic medal for the Philippines,” said Jean Henri Lhuillier, president of the Amateur Softball Association of the Philippines (ASA-PHIL) and president and CEO of Cebuana Lhuillier. As part of their final buildup for the Asian Games, the Blu Girls are currently in Japan for an intensive training stint that began in late August and will run through September, allowing the team to sharpen its preparation in the country where the Games will be held.  The training forms part of the team’s broader international preparation, supported by the ASA-PHIL and the Philippine Sports Commission (PSC), to ensure the players are ready for the demands of major international competition. The Blu Girls open their campaign against host Japan on Sept. 26, followed by Chinese Taipei on Sept. 27, South Korea on Sept. 28, Thailand on Sept. 29, and Singapore on Sept. 30.  They close out the preliminary round against China on Oct. 1 and Hong Kong on Oct. 2, completing a seven-game stretch against Asia’s strongest softball programs.
