Busch Systems Highlights Recycling Benefits of Reorganizing Office Waste Collections Ahead of America Recycles Day

Research from Busch Systems and campus recycling organizations connects bin standards and centralized collections with improved waste diversion.

Barrie, Canada, November 5, 2026 -- Ahead of America Recycles Day on November 15, 2026, Busch Systems is highlighting research showing that bin standards and centralized collections can improve recycling and waste diversion.

Research published in October 2024 by Busch Systems, a North American manufacturer of recycling and waste containers, in collaboration with the Association for the Advancement of Sustainability in Higher Education, the College & University Recycling Coalition, the Zero Waste Campus Council, the National Wildlife Federation and Campus Race to Zero Waste, surveyed 170 colleges and universities across the United States and Canada on how they collect waste and recycling from offices and academic buildings.

The findings reveal a clear trend toward modernizing indoor waste collections to centralized collection. Among the large four-year American institutions in the sample, 66 percent have formally adopted bin design standards and 72 percent have adopted uniform labels and signage to help people accurately sort waste. Separately, 44 percent have partially or completely discontinued deskside wastebasket collections from office workstations, and 39 percent have likewise done so from inside classrooms. Schools who've implemented this model pointed to improved recycling and waste diversion – 58 percent from office deskside locations, 74 percent from classrooms – as well as labor savings - 86 percent from office deskside and 93 percent from classrooms.

Most notably, the schools performing best were the ones that had made these changes. Institutions that recycle or otherwise divert 40 percent or more of their waste from landfills were 15 percent more likely to have adopted uniform bin standards and 35 percent more likely to have discontinued custodial deskside service.

Results reported this year at the University of Michigan, which uses standardized Busch Systems containers as part of its campus program, point the same way. According to an article in The University Record, a centralized collection pilot at the university's Ruthven Administration Building that replaced deskside bins with shared waste stations produced a 20 percent reduction in total waste generated, an 80 percent decrease in recycling contamination and a 28 percent increase in material diverted to recycling and compost, while eliminating roughly 9,000 plastic liner bags per year. The University Record also reported a 70 percent increase in diversion at the North Campus Administrative Complex after it aligned with the university's bin standards.

“To improve recycling and waste diversion we have to rethink how waste is collected,” said Alec Cooley, Senior Advisor at Busch Systems and author of the report. “This study reinforces how standardized bin design and centralized collection arrangements are fundamental to a modern high-performing collection system that achieves zero waste goals.”

The same principle is being applied to food waste. Waste audits discussed in the Organics Collection From Indoor Settings webinar found that organics and food packaging can make up 25 percent or more of waste from offices, breakrooms and public areas. By focusing custodial service on a smaller number of common space locations, centralized collection arrangements make it economical to add a third bin to divert food and related packaging without increasing the overall labor commitment. The survey showed 19 percent of the large four-year American schools collected food waste from all or most academic and administrative locations. An additional 44 percent had pilot or limited collections, and 9 percent were actively planning wider implementation.

In Wake County, North Carolina, Toward Zero Waste reports that its SHARE food recovery program operates in 47 public schools, recovering an average of 41 unopened items per school each day. Because food safety rules exclude unwrapped fruit from sharing tables, participating schools collect uneaten whole fruit separately in Busch Systems Multi Recycler containers for donation to community food pantries. Toward Zero Waste recorded 669 uneaten apples and pears discarded at one elementary school over eight weeks before the change.

WSL, PSC team up to develop next generation of Filipino surfers

SIARGAO, Philippines — The World Surf League (WSL) wants to make sure Filipino surfers get more than just the opportunity to compete against the world's best, with its partnership with the Philippine Sports Commission (PSC) expected to help push the sport's development in the country. WSL president Andrew Stark said bringing the Championship Tour to Cloud 9 was also an opportunity to expose young Filipino surfers to the international competition and give local talents a closer look at what it takes to compete at the highest level. The league worked with the PSC, headed by Chairman Patrick "Pato" Gregorio, to bring the Philippines Pro to Siargao, bringing the Championship Tour to Philippine shores for the first time. Stark welcomed the support extended by the government sports agency and said the league was pleased with the reception it received from the local community. "It's incredible. It's a beautiful place and, you know, we feel very welcome here. We've got a fantastic partnership with the Philippine Sports Commission," Stark said. The WSL also brought local youngsters into the event through its Rising Tides program, where children had the chance to surf with professional athletes, meet the competitors and learn from experienced surfers. It also worked with the Siargao Island Surfing Association on the board caddy program, giving junior surfers a chance to assist competitors with their boards and experience the competition up close. "We really want to make sure we're giving back to the kids," Stark said. Stark was also impressed with the showing of Filipino wildcards John Mark "Marama" Tokong, Jayuard Alciso, Noah Arkfeld and Mara Lopez who faced an international field packed with world champions and established Championship Tour campaigners. He particularly praised Tokong, whose familiarity with Cloud 9 and ability in the water made him a tough competitor even for the visiting stars. "Marama particularly, he is incredible out here. I mean, all the world tour surfers, the world champions, they were scared of him. Like, wow, this guy is unbelievable. He's very talented," Stark said. While both Filipino bets eventually saw their campaigns end, Stark said their participation gave them valuable exposure. Their appearances in the Championship Tour were carried to an international audience through the WSL's broadcasts and digital platforms. "For those Filipino wildcards, it's life-changing for them. They've now been broadcast to the world and their social media followings will go through the roof and they're all over the mainstream media globally," Stark said. Stark believes the exposure could help Tokong, Alciso, Arkfeld and Lopez attract more attention, while also inspiring other Filipino surfers to work toward competing internationally. The Philippines Pro has also provided a boost to Siargao's tourism campaign. Athletes competing in the event have been sharing their experiences on the island through social media, giving their followers a glimpse of Cloud 9, its resorts, restaurants and other local attractions. The WSL said the Championship Tour surfers have a combined social media following of more than 50 million, giving Siargao and the Philippines added exposure to audiences around the world. Stark also revealed that the league is looking at ways to expand its presence in the country, including the possibility of establishing a regional base in the Philippines to support its activities across Southeast Asia. The WSL has already confirmed another edition of the Philippines Pro at Cloud 9 in 2027. "We've confirmed the event for 2027, so we're really excited that Cloud 9, Siargao, Philippines will be back again next year," Stark said. The return will give Filipino surfers another chance to measure themselves against international competition, while local youngsters will have more opportunities to take part in development activities organized alongside the event. SportsPlus Foundation champions inclusive sports through partnership with Special Olympics Pilipinas

MANILA, Philippines — Every athlete deserves the opportunity to train, compete, and pursue their dreams. But for athletes with disabilities, access to appropriate sports equipment and training resources can make a meaningful difference in their journey. Recognizing the importance of inclusive sports, SportsPlus Foundation, the social development arm of SportsPlus PH, has partnered with Special Olympics Pilipinas to help address the equipment needs of athletes with disabilities. Special Olympics Pilipinas is part of the global Special Olympics movement, which uses the power of sports to promote inclusion and create opportunities for people with disabilities to develop their skills, build confidence, and experience the benefits of participation in sports. Through this partnership, SportsPlus Foundation provided equipment for various sports such as basketball, football, and badminton, among others, that meets athletes’ actual training and competition requirements on October 22 in Sta. Elena, Marikina. By coordinating closely with Special Olympics Pilipinas, the initiative ensures the support is appropriate, relevant, and aligned with the intended beneficiaries’ needs. For SportsPlus Foundation, supporting athletes with disabilities is part of a broader commitment to building communities where opportunities are more accessible, and every individual can participate and thrive. “It is our privilege to turn over this equipment to Special Olympics Pilipinas as part of SportsPlus Foundation’s efforts to promote inclusive sports and expand opportunities for Filipino athletes of all abilities,” said SportsPlus Head of Brand Marketing Paul Macalindong. “SportsPlus believes that sports should be accessible to everyone, regardless of ability or background. Through this initiative, we hope to help athletes access the equipment and training support they need to develop their skills, build confidence, and pursue their full potential.” Special Olympics Pilipinas, meanwhile, highlighted the collaboration’s role in advancing inclusive community development. “We are a non-government organization, and our funding comes from grants, including from SportsPlus, which is huge,” said Special Olympics Pilipinas Sports Manager Zoren Alfonso. “We are grateful and thankful to SportsPlus Foundation because this donation was not just sports equipment, but a path for athletes to improve in their sport. This will help them improve and experience what it feels like to have quality sports equipment that helps develop their skills.” Through partnerships like this, SportsPlus Foundation hopes to help create a more inclusive sporting environment where athletes are supported not only in training, but also in pursuing their goals.
