South Korea signals military exemption cuts for athletes after Asian Games backlash

South China Morning Post - Oct 7, 2026

The reward of a military service exemption for gold medal-winning South Korean athletes could be abolished or reduced in future after public backlash to some controversial comments from winners at the Asian Games. Three players from the men’s football team came under fire for comments following South Korea’s 1-0 win over Japan in the Asian Games final last weekend in Japan. All three apologised but a broader debate had already reignited over whether athletes should receive special treatment for...

Emotion, tears as Messi retires from Argentina national team

BUENOS AIRES, Argentina — Lionel Messi brought the curtain down on his 21-year international career on Tuesday, bidding farewell to adoring Argentina fans in an emotional final appearance for the former world champions in Buenos Aires. In a perfectly scripted finale, the 39-year-old widely regarded as the greatest football player in history signed off with his 126th international goal in front of 85,000 supporters as Argentina cruised to a 3-0 victory over Benin. Messi, playing in his record-extending 208th international, also provided the assist for the opening goal scored by veteran Nicolas Otamendi, with Nico Paz also scoring. But the match was a footnote to the occasion itself, which saw Messi savoring the adulation of the Monumental Stadium crowd one last time for an event which had been billed as 'The Last Tango'. Beforehand, Messi wiped away tears as the bus carrying him and his Argentina team-mates made its way through crowds of wellwishers en route to the stadium. Messi took the field alongside his three children and received affectionate waves from his wife, Antonela Roccuzzo, and his mother, Celia Cuccittini, who were watching from a VIP box. Shortly before kick off, a giant Argentina jersey bearing the word "Gracias" (Thank You) above the football superstar's No.10 was laid out on the pitch as the crowd roared their approval. Messi welled up again as Falklands War veteran Fabio Santana sang the national anthem beside a banner which read -- "The Malvinas are Argentine" -- the same banner held aloft by players after their 2-1 World Cup semi-final win over England. The match was halted in the 10th minute -- in tribute to Messi's famous shirt number -- for a minute-long ovation to the former Barcelona and Paris Saint-Germain star. He crowned the occasion with a goal from the penalty spot in the 71st minute. 'Gave it my all' At the final whistle a drone show lit up the night sky above the stadium, showing Messi's image and thanking the eight-time Ballon D'Or-winner for his career. Messi's farewell came two and a half months after Argentina's World Cup final defeat to Spain in New Jersey, where Messi exited in tears after making little impression in an ill-tempered 1-0 loss. "I gave it my all; I have nothing left to give, and besides, there are great young players coming up who deserve their chance," Messi wrote at the time. Before Tuesday's game, the University of Buenos Aires awarded Messi an honorary doctorate in a ceremony at the Argentine Football Association (AFA) headquarters. Messi, who has in the past spoken of his regret at not studying more, expressed pride at the distinction. "To be able to say that I am an honorary doctor!," he joked. Outside the Argentina Football Association headquarters, fans unfurled a huge Argentine flag with his image inscribed "The joy of my life." Former Barcelona team-mate Neymar paid tribute to the departing champion on X. "It's not just Argentina that thanks you, the world thanks you for everything you did for football. Thank you for making me love football even more," he said. Messi remains under contract with Inter Miami until 2028, although following the death of his father, Jorge, two months ago, he revealed he may hang up his boots for good sooner than anticipated. Messi's departure comes four years after his greatest triumph in international football, leading Argentina to victory at the 2022 World Cup to end the country's 36-year wait for a third title, cementing his status as Diego Maradona's heir. "I believe Messi gave everything, absolutely everything, so it doesn't bother me at all that he's leaving. He has more than earned it, let him enjoy himself, let him rest," Cecilia Adriano, 52, told AFP. During his time with the Albiceleste, Argentina won one World Cup, were runners-up twice (Brazil 2014 and North America 2026) and were also crowned Copa America champions in 2021 and 2024.

Revitalized TNT eyes win as PBA Govs’ Cup back in action

MANILA, Philippines — TNT hopes the long conference break will do the team well as the Tropang 5G try to rev up their title-retention bid in the PBA Season 50 Governors' Cup with new import Nick Hornsby in tow against Terrafirma on Wednesday at the Ninoy Aquino Stadium. Following a long, seven-week break to give way to Gilas’ international tournaments, the PBA resumes, something that may have given TNT the needed long time off considering it started the conference without some of its key players. But in the tournament’s resumption, the Tropang 5G are welcoming back sharp shooter Calvin Oftana and veteran Jayson Castro, while Hornsby got some time to adjust with his teammates. Game time is at 7:30 p.m. with TNT shooting for its fifth win in nine games against Terrafirma, which enters the match with a 3-5 card. Both teams are looking for the all important win that can galvanize their Top Four hopes in Group A. NLEX and San Miguel Beer lead the with their similar 7-2 slates, while Converge occupies solo third 5-4.  Only the Top Four advance to the crossover semifinals against Group B's best. The Tropang 5G welcome the 31-year-old Hornsby, who incidentally will be the team’s third import for the conference after Darius Day and Rahlir Hollis-Jefferson. Hornsby is fresh off a stint with the Hangtuah Jakarta in the Indonesian Basketball League, while also playing previously for the coming off a recent stint with the Edmonton Stingers   in the Canadian Elite Basketball League. Original import choice Rondae Hollis-Jefferson is still unavailable as he continues the road to recovery since sustaining an Achilles injury while playing for Meralco in the EASL last year. "RHJ still rehabbing. Hopefully, he's ready by quarters," TNT team manager Jojo Lastimosa said. Meanwhile, NLEX will be gunning for its eighth win in 10 starts under new coach Jimmy Alapag when the team battles Macau at 5:15 p.m. The Road Warriors have been a revelation under Alapag, even though the former crack TNT and Gilas playmaker was named the team’s new coach, a few weeks before the tournament started. NLEX will unveil new import Deonte Burton as he takes the spot of Dequan Jones, who sustained a conference-ending injury last August. The Road Warriors will be facing a decimated Black Pandas with key players Ramon Cao, Damian Chongqui, Jenning Leung, and import DeVondre Perry - reportedly will no longer be with the team.

Ateneo looks to continue strong start vs La Salle

FACING rival and defending champ De La Salle, Ateneo de Manila looks to continue its strong start in the UAAP Season 89 men's basketball tournament at the Mall of Asia Arena Wednesday. The Blue Eagles face the Green Archers at 6 p.m. in the main event of the day, ticketed separately from the first game between Adamson and National University at 2:30 p.m. Leading Ateneo to a 3-1 start for a share of the standings lead with Far Eastern University, coach Louie Alas emphasized healing for the Eagles rather than focusing on facing their rivals. Ateneo is enjoying a good start including an 87-76 win against NU last Saturday. This follows a gloomy offseason centered on the deaths of players Divine Adili and Rene Baterbonia in a training camp in Dipaculao, Aurora last June. "He's a good coach (coach Topex Robinson). The way we prepared for our previous games, we'll do the same or even prepare harder," said Alas. "Coaching Ateneo is big already. The important thing for me is, like I said, the healing. It's easier to heal when you're winning so that's the big motivation. We'll try to prepare as hard as we can." Alas and Robinson were together in Alaska and Phoenix in the PBA. Now, they lead the protagonists in one of Philippine collegiate basketball's biggest rivalries. “Every, I guess, as a whole, every Ateneo-La Salle game is a different animal," said Robinson, whose team split its season-series against Ateneo last year. "It doesn’t matter where you are at the standings. It doesn’t matter who you’re up against on the other side of the bench. It’s always gonna be something that we always look forward to. "Coach Louie has been part of my growth as a coach as well. We've been together when we were in Alaska. We were together in Phoenix. A lot of my learnings came from him. It's really going to be a very exciting experience for me as a young coach." La Salle is coming off a 112-87 decimation of University of the East last Sunday to snap a 2-game skid and rise to 2-2, tied with NU, UST, and UP from third to sixth places.  Leading the way for Ateneo are rookie and Alas' son Kieffer as well as Jared Bahay who take on the Jacob Cortez and Mason Amos-led La Salle.

Fresh start fuels Obiena’s resurgent 2026 season

CHANGING his environment and rediscovering his passion in pole vault powered EJ Obiena’s resurgent 2026 season. Following a down season in 2025, Obiena bounced back and seized 10 gold medals this year including his title defense at the Asian Games in Japan. Obiena aced his second Asiad gold with a meet record 5.91m clearance. “Probably, a different perspective, I’m a little bit happier, I enjoy what I do, I have a much brighter perspective on the sport that I love. Sometimes that matters,” said Obiena. A 2-time Olympian, Obiena said his coaching change and moving his base from Italy to Greece last June to train with his friend and world No. 2 Emmanouil Karalis really moved the needle for him. “Of course that influenced a lot of things, I mean, it’s hard to change a perspective without a change of venue, change of mindset,” said world No. 10 Obiena. aid world No. 10 Obiena. “How do you say this, it’s a natural course, so with that I’m h appy that I’m training with a guy who’s jolly ,who’s enjoyng, I’m learning from him as much as he’s learning from me, and with that, it’s a recipe for good things.” Now coached by Marcin Szczepanski, Obiena said it was hard to part ways with his former coach Vitaly Petrov, though. Petrov trained Obiena for 12 years from 2014 to 2026. The 30-year-old expressed gratitude to Petrov who transformed him into a worldclass pole vaulter. “Of course, Vitaly and I, we talked, he congratulated me, I told him after the competition, we’re good,” said Obiena. “I think we both understood, we’re at that point in our career, that we decided that it would be better for me to move, and with that, I really love the guy, I love him more than just a coach, so with that, I really appreciate his honesty, his transparency, and he still helped me, he helped me get to where I’m at today, and with that, I’m thankful.”

White Sox down Guardians; Yankees on brink after loss

LOS ANGELES — The Chicago White Sox rallied to beat the Cleveland Guardians in the latest stop on their fairytale Major League Baseball playoff run on Monday (Tuesday in Manila) as the New York Yankees edged closer to elimination after a defeat to Tampa Bay. Munetaka Murakami, Braden Montgomery and Chase Meidroth drove in the winning runs for Chicago in a 4-3 victory at Cleveland's Progressive Field that leaves the White Sox with a commanding 2-0 lead in the best-of-five series. The White Sox — carrying the hopes of lifetime fan Pope Leo XIV — are aiming to continue one of the most remarkable turnaround seasons in baseball. After three straight seasons with 100 or more defeats the White Sox finished the regular season with an 84-78 record, snagging the sixth seed in the American League. In their first playoff series since 2021 they ousted the Houston Astros in two games in the Wild Card round. They now need only one more win to return to the AL Championship Series for the first time since their World Series-winning campaign in 2005. White Sox manager Will Venable saluted his team's character after climbing out of an early 2-0 hole to claim victory. "It's the same stuff we have seen all year from this group," Venable said. "There is no stopping. There is just this mentality that we're going to go out and going to play all nine innings, all 27 outs, whatever happens happens. "There's no let down or no discouragement from our group. They just continue to fight and battle." White Sox reliever Sean Burke bottled up the Cleveland offense, giving up just one hit and one run in 5 1/3 innings before being replaced by closer Grant Taylor with two outs in the eighth inning. A triple from Cleveland's Jo Adell made it a one-run game heading to the ninth, but Taylor mopped up the final three outs to seal victory. Cleveland skipper Stephen Vogt admitted his team had left themselves a daunting task as the series moves to Chicago for games three and four. "I am not going to sugarcoat it. We've backed ourselves into a corner," Vogt said. "If there's anything I know about this group of guys is that we love challenges like this. We are going to embrace it." Error-prone Yankees stumble The winner of Chicago and Cleveland's series will face either the Yankees or Tampa Bay Rays for a place in the World Series. The Rays look the likeliest to advance to that showdown after punishing a litany of fielding errors against the Yankees on Monday to claim a 5-2 victory and a 2-0 series lead. The Yankees committed three errors in the first inning alone — tying the record for the most in a postseason opening inning — to cough up an early unearned run against ace Cam Schlittler. A solo shot from Ben Rice in the fourth tied it at 1-1, but the Yankees failed to cash in after loading the bases in the fifth inning. The Rays duly made them pay for that by taking advantage of another fielding error to compile a four-run fifth that made it 5-1, including a two-run single from Richie Palacios. Rice gave the Yankees hope with another solo shot in the eighth, but Rays star closer Bryan Baker came out for the ninth and needed just nine pitches to bag the final three outs and clinch victory. Yankees manager Aaron Boone said his team's calamitous defensive display was "not good enough." "Obviously a really rough night to say the least for us," Boone said. "We've got to get over it. We've responded all year to difficult times and we've got to do that again. "Tonight was just not good enough for us, and certainly not good enough to beat that ball club."

Falcons demolish Saints

LOS ANGELES — Atlanta Falcons running backs Bijan and Brian Robinson tore apart the Saints, 45-24, Monday to spoil the party on an emotional night in New Orleans. The Robinsons — no relation — scored five rushing touchdowns between them to silence a crowd that had arrived in boisterous mood for festivities to mark 20 years since the Superdome reopened after Hurricane Katrina. The Saints managed two Alvin Kamara rushing touchdowns, a third caught by Devaughn Vele, and a field goal early in the second half that supporters booed, frustrated by coach Kellen Moore's apparent lack of faith in his offense on 4th down. Victory in the NFC South clash sent the Falcons — revitalized since the return of quarterback Michael Penix Jr. in their previous game — top of their division alongside Carolina, on 2-2, while New Orleans sank to 1-3. "I love the primetime game under the lights. Like, it just brings out a different energy, and I just love it for this team," said Bijan Robinson. The game was a rematch of the original "Domecoming" in late September 2006, when the Superdome reopened after suffering extensive damage in Hurricane Katrina. Katrina slammed into the US Gulf Coast the previous year, causing catastrophic flooding. Over 1,000 died in the disaster. The Superdome served as a last resort shelter for 30,000 storm evacuees even after the hurricane tore a 50-foot hole in its giant white roof, and was rapidly repaired. The original "Domecoming" game saw the Saints come out 23-3 winners, but the home fans' jubilation was short-lived Monday once the actual football began. Bijan Robinson — fresh from two touchdowns on a stunning showing against Green Bay — rushed for another on the second play of the night. He weaved 59 yards with no Saints player even laying a hand on him. New Orleans contributed to its own downfall, missing a field goal, turning over possession on a fumble, and then conceding a holding penalty when an Atlanta 4th and goal attempt appeared to have failed. Bijan Robinson made them pay, rushing for his second. This time, the Saints hit straight back. Quarterback Tyler Shough sent a 44-yard pass to Chris Olave, which was followed by Kamara rushing to the end zone. But Brian Robinson Jr. added touchdowns in the second and third quarters, rendering Kamara's second meaningless. Jahan Dotson added a further touchdown from a 31-yard Penix pass, before Brian Robinson Jr.'s third. Vele took a superb catch for a consolation touchdown with barely a minute left.
