PUTRAJAYA, Malaysia — Malaysia's foreign minister said Wednesday that the government will not budge over a ban on Israeli athletes in a para swimming competition and has decided that the country will not host any events in the future involving Israel. Malaysia, a strong supporter of the Palestinian cause, is among the predominantly Muslim countries that do not have diplomatic relations with Israel. The government has said Israeli swimmers cannot join the competition in eastern Sarawak state in July, which serves as a qualifying event for the 2020 Tokyo Paralympics. Foreign Minister Saifuddin Abdullah said the Cabinet affirmed last week...

Jan 22, 2019

BANGKOK — Australia's foreign minister praised Thailand for its handling of a young Saudi woman who fled her family to seek asylum in Australia, but also reminded it of continuing concern about a Bahraini soccer player granted asylum in Australia who remains in Thai detention. Marise Payne met with senior Thai officials in Bangkok on Thursday after Australia announced it would assess the request for asylum by 18-year-old Rahaf Mohammed Alqunun, who was stopped Saturday at a Bangkok airport on her way to Australia and her passport seized. She said she was fleeing abuse by her family. Payne told reporters...

BANGKOK — The Football Association of Thailand has fired Milovan Rajevac as head coach after the national team's 4-1 opening loss to India at the Asian Cup. Thai FA president Somyot Poompanmoung had warned ahead of the continental tournament that Rajevac's job was on the line if he couldn't take the team to the second round. He announced the decision to fire Rajevac after Sunday's game in Abu Dhabi, despite Thailand still having group games against Bahrain and the United Arab Emirates to play. In a statement released early Monday he says, "It was not the playing format that Thai...

Sharapova beats Bacsinszky in 1st round of Shenzhen Open

Jan 22, 2019

SHENZHEN, China — Maria Sharapova returned to competitive tennis with a 6-2, 7-6 (3) win against Timea Bacsinszky in the first round of Shenzhen Open on Monday. Sharapova cut short her campaign in September to recover from shoulder complaint. The fifth-seeded Russian, a semifinalist here last year, hit 23 winners against the unseeded Swiss player.
