Eala exits Ningbo Open after bowing to Russian foe

(Updated) MANILA, Philippines — Filipino tennis ace Alexandra “Alex” Eala’s campaign at the 2026 Ningbo Open came to an end on Thursday after absorbing a 5-7, 4-6 setback against world No. 13 Diana Shnaider of Russia  at the Ningbo Yinzhou Tennis Center in China. Eala, ranked 20th in the world, has failed to reach the quarterfinal round of a WTA Tour sanctioned tournament for the fifth consecutive time. The last time the 22-year-old Filipina made the round of 8 was in the 2026 Washington Open, where she won her first WTA Tour championship. Eala has not barged into the quarterfinals of the National Bank Open (round of 16), Cincinnati Open (round of 32), US Open (round of 32), and Singapore Open (round of 16). After a bronze medal finish in the Asian Games, Eala suffered her worst loss in the 2026 season at the Wuhan Open, when she was stunned by No. 217 Shi Han of China last October 12. With a mission to end her slump, Eala opened her Ningbo Open campaign strong with an impressive 6-3, 6-1 victory over Diane Parry of France in the round of 32. Against Shnaider, Eala put up a fight in the opening frame and managed to tie the score at 5-all. Shnaider, however, broke Eala's service and took a hard-fought 52-minute opening set, 7–5. After trading early breaks to even the score at 4-all in the second set, Shnaider took advantage of Eala's weak returns to secure the win. “It’s interesting to fight against a lefty. It’s a tough match, and I am glad I managed to pull through,” Shnaider said after the match.

Chameleons defeat Highrisers for 3rd straight win in PVL

MANILA, Philippines — The Nxled Chameleons posted their third straight win in the Premier Volleyball League (PVL) All-Filipino Conference after taking down the Galeries Tower Highrisers, 25-16, 22-25, 25-17, 25-19, on Thursday afternoon at the Mall of Asia Arena in Pasay City. The undefeated Nxled was led by former Petro Gazz champion players Brooke Van Sickle, Jonah Sabete, MJ Phillips and Myla Pablo. “Well, it's nice to see that we have the same resilience that we showed in the last part of the PVL On Tour, and especially during the Invitational. So we started definitely following the same line, so I see a bunch of determination in the team,” Nxled coach Ettore Guidetti said. “I see the team definitely more calm and serene, even if we are facing difficult situations, because this conference is made of teams that are, all of them, very good. There is not a single team that you can consider weak. And so it's really important to see that this kind of energy is definitely being constant.” Sabete led the scoring with 22 points on 18 attacks, three blocks, and an ace, along with nine excellent receptions. Phillips added 14 points and three-time Most Valuable Player (MVP) Van Sickle finished with a double-double output of 12 points and 13 excellent digs. Former Cignal Super Spiker Gel Cayuna also proved to be a prized acquisition for Nxled as she registered 20 excellent sets and six points. The Chameleons also formed a wall with 14 blocks over the Highrisers, who only had four. Galeries Tower dropped to 0-3 in the team standings.  Nxled will have ample time to rest before facing dangerous Choco Mucho on Nov. 3.
