Avaricio, Bisera lead charged battle for LPGT season honors

MANILA, Philippines — With less than P100,000 separating the top three players in the Ladies Philippine Golf Tour’s Order of Merit race, the ICTSI South Pacific Classic looms as a pivotal battleground in the chase for the season’s top honors, with Chanelle Avaricio seeking another victory to bolster her bid and Yvon Bisera determined to protect her lead. Avaricio, who has captured two titles this season at Pinewoods and Summit Point via one-stroke victories, joins Bisera, the winner at Lakewood and Pradera Verde, in a high-stakes showdown in the P1.25-million championship blasting off Tuesday (Oct. 20) at South Pacific Golf and Leisure Estates in Davao City. Bisera leads the OOM derby with P439,150, followed by former OOM champion Harmie Constantino with P377,100 and Avaricio with P358,600. The narrow margins leave the standings wide open, with the South Pacific Classic and the season-ending leg at Apo the following week offering crucial opportunities to seize the lead or strengthen a title bid. Fresh from her breakthrough victory at last week’s Pueblo de Oro leg, Tiffany Lee has also moved into contention, boosting her OOM earnings to P318,350. The young Korean ended a two-year title drought after outlasting Bisera in a tense, back-and-forth final-round duel marked by precision and poise. Lee had burst onto the LPGT scene with a victory in her professional debut at Splendido Taal in 2024. But the South Pacific battle is shaping up to be more than a rematch between Avaricio and Bisera, or even a three-player contest with Lee in the mix. Together with Avaricio, Mafy Singson returns from a challenging but valuable campaign on the China Tour, while a deep field of contenders looks to make its move with only two legs left on the circuit organized by Pilipinas Golf Tournaments, Inc. Defending her position among the leading contenders is Sarah Ababa, the reigning OOM champion, who is due for another title run after settling for a share of the runner-up honors in a three-way playoff at Lakewood. She has since recorded four consecutive finishes of fifth or better, underscoring her consistency heading into the Davao swing. Ababa also has fond memories of South Pacific, having won the event last year by edging Bisera by one stroke. Another strong showing could put her back in the thick of both the tournament and season-long title races. Princess Superal, meanwhile, will be out to rediscover the form that made her one of the country’s most accomplished campaigners at home and abroad. The former US Girls’ Junior champion made her mark internationally, highlighted by her victory in the inaugural Asia Pacific Championship in Indonesia in 2022, where she upstaged several LPGA Tour major winners. Although Superal has struggled to regain that dominant form of late, the dwindling number of opportunities to make a statement could provide the impetus for a timely resurgence. Constantino, who scored a runaway victory at Caliraya Springs earlier this season, is another serious contender, alongside Daniella Uy, Marvi Monsalve, Kayla Nocum, Chihiro Ikeda, Martina Miñoza, Gretchen Villacencio, Pamela Mariano, Eunhua Nam, Monica Mandario, Velinda Castil and Rev Alcantara. Much of the spotlight, however, will remain on Avaricio, who hopes to carry her Summit Point momentum into Davao. She held off Bisera’s late charge of three consecutive birdies to prevail by a stroke, reinforcing her reputation as one of the tour’s most resilient finishers. Bisera, for her part, is determined to reclaim the South Pacific crown she won in 2023, a breakthrough triumph that signaled her rise among the LPGT’s leading players. With the current OOM leader seeking another title and her closest pursuers eager to close the gap, every stroke could carry significant weight beyond the tournament itself. The South Pacific Classic thus sets the stage for a compelling two-week finish, with the battle for the individual crown intertwined with the increasingly tight race for OOM supremacy. With the top three separated by just P80,550 and Lee also gaining ground, the Davao leg could reshape the standings ahead of the decisive season finale at Apo. TMT

Chameleons fend off Foxies to pick up 2nd straight win in All-Filipino

MANILA, Philippines — The Nxled Chameleons survived a five-set scare posted by the Farm Fresh Foxies, 25-19, 25-17, 22-25, 20-25, 15-12, to snatch their second consecutive win in the 2026-27 Premier Volleyball League (PVL) All-Filipino Conference-Siklab Series on Saturday afternoon at the FilOil EcoOil Centre in San Juan City. Both teams traded blows in the fifth canto, but Myla Pablo came alive in the late stretch, powering back-to-back kills to give Nxled a 13-10 advantage. Foxies’ Ces Molina slammed a kill, but Pablo quickly responded with a hit of her own to send the Chameleons to match point advantage, 14-11. Veteran Royse Tubino said that the match was not over after a crosscourt shot, but Pablo blocked Molina’s hit to finish the match 15-12. Pablo scored the last four points for the Chameleons to win. The Chameleons earned a 2-0 set advantage before Farm Fresh was powered by Jonna Perdido and Trisha Tubu in the third and fourth frames, pushing the match into a decider. Brooke Van Sickle still led the scoring for Nxled with 20 points along with 16 excellent digs, while Pablo backed her up with 17 markers. “I do think the competition is getting harder now. We have only eight teams, and the teams are more condensed, so there are better and good players. This is gonna be definitely hard. We have seen a lot of five setters early in the conference, everyone is tough,” Van Sickle said during the post-game press conference. Jacq Acuña and MJ Phillips both joined the double-digit mark, chipping in 12 and 11 points, respectively. Leading the playmaking for the Chameleons was Gel Cayuna, who made 31 excellent sets. Farm Fresh banked on Ces Molina, who made 16 points on 13 attacks, two blocks, and an ace, while Mylene Rezanova added 12. Rizza Cruz, Tubu, and Perdido all chipped in with an identical nine-point output.
