Palawan jrs tennis returns to Mindanao for 2-week talent hunt

Oct 8, 2026

MANILA, Philippines — The country’s longest-running grassroots tennis talent-search returns to Mindanao for another two-week swing, with the Palawan Pawnshop Juniors Age Group Tennis Championships getting under way Thursday (Oct. 8) at the RGS and MIbang courts in Dipolog City. The Group 2 tournament, sanctioned by Philta and Universal Tennis Ranking, opened with action in four of the eight age-group divisions for boys and girls, with a fresh crop of prospects expected to emerge as established contenders battle to strengthen their rankings and build momentum on the national junior circuit. The spotlight shifts to the premier boys’ 18-and-under division Friday, with Keyan Sarip, Christian Dalida, Glandy Tatad and Hazer Malicay leading separate title bids in a field that also includes Jayson Pañares, Ivan Romero, Sky Bacongga and Clark Abalo. A similarly competitive cast is lined up in the girls’ 18-and-U class, where Joy Busig, Marlyn Mesiana, Julienne Aliser and Summer Regalado banner the field against Princess Pampula, Gifthea Sisi, Angelica Acido and Gabrielle Bulado. With ranking points and momentum at stake, the contenders are expected to go all out in the two-week Mindanao swing, which moves to Pagadian City next week. For details and registration, contact tournament director Bobby Mangunay at 0915-4046464. The tournament is part of the long-running program initiated by Palawan Pawnshop president and CEO Bobby Castro to broaden the sport’s reach, discover promising players from the countryside and provide them with a pathway to higher-level competition and training. Sarip, Tatad and Bacongga will also see action in the boys’ 16-and-U division, where they face Prince Centino, Vincent Balucos, Dwyane Bawiga, Yurham Edulan and Armik Serillo. Centino, meanwhile, leads the title chase in the boys’ 14-and-U class of the tournament supported by Dunlop, ICON Golf & Sports and Palawan Group of Companies, which also features Sherwin Gom-Os, Bawiga and Edulan. In the youngest boys’ division, Edrhean Sumalpong and Nash Diaz are set for a keen battle in the 12-and-U class, with Luke Digal, Kier Mondejar and a host of other hopefuls ready to challenge the early favorites. Bogo City’s Etha Seno headlines the girls’ 16-and-U field as she seeks another leg victory against Kyth Solis, Francesh Navarrez, Bless Labadisos, Ma. Juleah Caña, Alexa Manahan, Rian Daguipa and Bulado. Seno is also tipped to contend for the girls’ 14-and-U crown, but faces stiff opposition from Aizelle Libonfacil, Navarrez, Labadisos and Manahan. Libonfacil looms as the player to beat in the girls’ 12-and-U division, although the younger field is expected to provide its share of surprises as the tournament unfolds. Doubles titles in the boys’ and girls’ 14-and-U and 18-and-under divisions will also be contested, adding another layer of competition to the ranking event. TMT

Bisera seeks third LPGT crown at Pueblo de Oro

MANILA, Philippines — After missing an overseas campaign, ace Davaoeña Yvon Bisera has turned the setback into a golden opportunity, setting her sights on a dominant third victory of the season at home. Bisera headlines a compact yet stellar field for the P1 million ICTSI Pueblo de Oro Championship, which gets going on Oct. 12 at the Pueblo de Oro Golf and Country Club in Cagayan de Oro City. While a chance to chase a second career overseas title initially beckoned, Bisera was forced to pivot back to the Ladies Philippine Golf Tour after visa complications derailed her entry into next week’s Women’s China Open on the China LPGA Tour. The redirection puts the talented Filipina right back on track in the domestic circuit organized by Pilipinas Golf Tournaments, Inc. Bisera has enjoyed a strong international and local campaign this year, finishing as runner-up at the Singapore Ladies Masters in June, narrowly missing a follow-up to her breakthrough Thailand Ladies Masters triumph last season. She also contended strongly at the recent Kenda Tire Open of the Taiwan LPGA Tour, securing a ninth-place finish despite a costly second-round stumble. Locally, Bisera remains a primary force. She narrowly missed out on her third LPGT win of the season at Summit Point last month, finishing just one stroke behind Chanelle Avaricio. That razor-thin margin firmly establishes Bisera as the player to beat in this 54-hole sixth leg of the eight-leg circuit. However, capturing the crown will be no easy task for the frontrunner. Bisera faces fierce competition from reigning Order of Merit winner Sarah Ababa, alongside tour veterans Princess Superal and Daniella Uy, both eager to snap prolonged title droughts. Rounding out the formidable challengers are former leg winners Tiffany Lee and Chihiro Ikeda. The three-day championship field also features Martina Miñoza, Rev Alcantara, Gretchen Villacencio, Apple Fudolin, Velinda Castil, Eunhua Nam, Eva Miñoza, and Angela Mangana. Adding extra intrigue to the mix is amateur standout Ace Superal, who is thrilled to participate in a rare professional stint as she hones her game for upcoming domestic and international competitions. Meanwhile, other top LPGT contenders are taking the international stage. Chanelle Avaricio, a two-leg winner this season, and multi-titled player Mafy Singson are both set to compete in the Women’s China Open, which gets underway on Saturday (Oct. 9) in Shanghai. TMT

Maria Sharapova praises Alex Eala’s grit, rise in WTA rankings

MANILA, Philippines — Former Grand Slam champion Maria Sharapova expressed her admiration for Filipina tennis sensation Alex Eala, whom she has been following on the WTA Tour for quite some time. Sharapova shared her praise for the Filipina netter during an episode of her podcast, Pretty Tough, which is currently a major hit across various streaming platforms. Sharapova admitted that she has watched several of Eala's matches, following her journey from breaking into the top 100 to reaching her current ranking as World No. 18 in the WTA standings. “I’ve been following you for several years now. I’ve watched your journey in the last few years flourish to where you are today,” Sharapova said. While Eala still has a long way ahead in her career, Sharapova believes the young star has what it takes to reach the pinnacle of success, citing how well she manages her matches. “You have a long way to go, but it is so impressive to see how you’ve handled and navigated everything,” Sharapova added. Among the highlights Sharapova pointed out was Eala's impressive run at Wimbledon in London, England, where she knocked out 2025 Wimbledon champion Iga Swiatek from the competition. Sharapova was equally impressed by Eala’s composure and eloquence during her post-match interviews. “It was this powerful, moving moment, especially your interview after, because there’s this combination of being gritty and persevering and being honest about your ability to fight and win,” Sharapova noted. The tennis icon added that she thoroughly enjoys watching Eala express herself in interviews. “And then being soft and vulnerable and honest,” Sharapova remarked. Eala could not hide her excitement and delight upon hearing Sharapova's high praise during their conversation. Sharapova is one of Eala’s childhood idols in the tennis world, and Eala even showed a photo of the two of them taken when she was still a young kid. TMT

PH to field 69 para-athletes in Asian Para Games

Following the return of Philippine athletes from the recently-concluded 20th Asian Games in Nagoya, Japan, the country is set to send off its delegation to the 5th Asian Para Games, which will also be held in the Japanese city. Among those expected to take part in the quadrennial meet are Paralympian swimmers Ernie Gawilan and Angel Otom, as well as javelin and shot put thrower Alyana Nuñez and veteran taekwondo jin Allain Ganapin. However, the team took a hit because para chess, which produced most of the country’s gold medals in the previous edition of the games in Hangzhou, is not included in the program. “Our campaign will be affected because of the pulling out of chess in the Asian Para Games,” Philippine chef-de-mission Francis Diaz told reporters on Wednesday. “So far these are our top probable gold medal winners [Gawilan, Otom], who are all gold medalists in the Asean Para Games in Nakhon Ratchasima, Thailand in January this year… The others, it’s a tall order but everyone is much prepared,” Diaz said. The sports official expected at least four gold medals, the same number won by the Asian Games athletes, for this year’s Games. Members of the national team attended a mass in the Philsports Complex in Pasig City and a sendoff ceremony was held right after. “Go for the gold. The higher the target, the better,” Philippine Paralympic Committee president Mike Barredo told the para-athletes. The 5th Asian Para Games will be held in Nagoya from Oct. 18 to 24, with para table tennis player Lhey Manginsay carrying the country’s flag at the opening ceremony.
